WILL OF ALEXANDER STEPHENS, SR.
In the name of God Amen. I Alexander Stephens of the County of Rowan, being through the abundant mercies of God though weak in body yet of a sound and prefect
understanding and memory, do constitute my last will and testament and desire it to be received of all men as such. I humbly bequeath my soul to God my maker
beseeching his most gracious exceptance of it through the all sufficient merits and of my most compassionate (illegible) in Jesus Christ (illegible). I give my body to the
earth from whence it was taken in full assurance that it will rise again at the resurrection of the great day. As for my burial, I desire it may be decent at the discretion of
my wife and executors hereafter named as my to my worldly state. I will and positively order that all my just debts be paid. I will and bequeath all my real and personal
property that I now possess to my dear and loving wife, Mary Stephens, to do and dispose of as she thinks proper to raise my children upon while she lives during her
widowhood, and then all my estate to be equally divided among all my children, and I do constitute my wife Mary Stephens my sole executor of this, my last will and
testament in witness whereof I do hereunto set my hand and seal this 24 of December 1819.
In the presence of Richard Briggs.
(Signed) Alexander Stephens

50. John Lemuel Briggs

1Collection of information collected by Nancy Sanders, https://sites.rootsweb.com/~ilbrown/One_Name/Briggs.html.
"John Briggs (that you speak of) was born John Lemuel Briggs, about 1787 in Rowan, NC, the son of James Briggs (b. and Anna (Collins) Briggs. John Briggs married Constance Peacock
(daughter of Samuel Peacock and Leah Jones Peacock), and migrated to Brown Co., Elkhorn Twp., Illinois, from N. Carolina. They had children: Samuel, Elizabeth, Sarah, John Duncan,
James, Darriel, Daniel, Constance, and Solomon. (Note: to confuse matters further, there was a John Lenard Briggs who married Matilda Briggs (a cousin). This John Lenard was probably
the son of Henry Briggs in Brown Co.)."
