Although there are several references to Mashel's first wifes maiden name as Blanchard, I have not been able to find any Blanchard connection other than hand written sheets I think my Grandfather wrote. The 1790 and 1800 Maryland Census list no Blanchard surnames. I do have a Death Certificate for Samuel and Benjamin (see scrapbook for death certificates) stating that their mothers maiden name was Sarah or Mary Roberts and have linked our family with the Roberts. Both families came from Maryland to Ohio at about the same time and Mashel bought property from Conrad Roberts. Another son-in-law of Conrad's named Blocher was Mashel's neighbor and bought property from Conrad. Several other Blochers show up in the area, so probably we had a migration of Conrad and his whole clan, including in-laws, coming to Ohio together.
A volunteer in the genealogy section of the Garst Museum in Greenville, Ohio had seen an aerial photograph of Mashel's property showing there were possibly 20 gave sites on the property.Deed Record for S32, T10, R01 recorded 1817 - Miami Valley Genealogical Index

Mash BuckinghamBe it remembered that heretofore to wit on the fifth day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty five before the probate Court of the County of aforesaid a writing purporting to be the last will and testament of Mash Buckingham late of said county deceased and Albert Penland and David Gibbs the subscribing witnesses thereto appeared in open court and on oath testified to the execution and attestation thereof and their testimony reduced to writing and by them subscribed is annexed and filed with said will.
And it appearing that said will was duly executed and attested and that at the time of the execution thereof the said testator was of full age of sound mind and memory and not under any restraints. The Court admits said will to probate and orders the same with testimony to be recorded and the same in the words and figures following to wit.
"In the name of God, Amen"
Know all men by these presents that I Mash Buckingham of the County of Darke in the State of Ohio. Being infirm in the body but sound in mind wish to dispose of my property both real and personal in the following manner as my last will and Testaments. To my wife Sarah Buckingham during her life and widowhood I bequeath to her her support on the farm I now live upon. I also bequeath to her a sufficient quantity of the proceeds of the farm for the support of the minor children which she has had by me until they become of age. I bequeath unto her all my household and kitchen furniture

I bequeath to my first wife's children, Catherine Emerson, once Catherine Buckingham, David Buckingham, Levi Buckingham, Benjamin Buckingham, Mary Brown, once Mary Buckingham, William Buckingham, all the farm I now live upon in an equal portion with all the proceeds there from after the support of my wife Sarah during her life as long as she remains my widow and the support of the heirs which she has had by me until they become of age. After the proceeds over and above the support of my wife and the above mentioned minor heirs which arises from the farm is to be equally divided between my first set of heirs above named having reference to a Book Acct. were each are charged with what they have got. I bequeath to my first wife's set of heirs all my books to be divided equally between them. But all those books that I got by my wife Sara Pitenger to belong to her and her heirs. I bequeath that my personal property shall be disposed of at public sale except two cows, eight sheep, hams for meat for the first year and grain for breadstuff then after paying all debts that I owe I bequeath the balance of the proceeds of the personal property disposed of to my last set of heirs in equal portion having reference to what the two oldest Lydia and Sara has received.
It is my wish that Benjamin Buckingham be administrator on my estate and acts as guardian for the minor heirs by giving surety at Court. This is the last will and testament of Mash Buckingham September 7th 1846 Darke Co., Ohio.

Education was a rare commodity in pioneer days. So it is little wonder that corruption in spelling and pronouncing names was very prevalent. In Great-Great-Grandfather Mashel Buckingham's case, various documents listed his first name as Mashel, Mash. Marshall and Marsh. However, his will was signed MASH. Dictionary meaning of these names could lead to some interesting applications and conclusions, not to mention observations.
My great, great grandfather(this is being compiled and written February 20, 1981, 200 years later.
According to family records, Mashel was born in Maryland in 1781, he being the son of great, great, great grandfather, Bard Buckingham. Continuing on from family records, Mashel married Sarah (Sally) Blancher and they had three children before moving to Ohio. They were Catherine (1807) whose husband was Henry Emerson; David., who married Morish Clay and Levi (1813) who was married first to a woman named Brunch and then later to Laura Tilson. In 1814 Mashel and Sarah and their three children migrated to Darke County, Ohio. There a daughter, Mary, was born and she was twice married, first to Joshua Brown, then to Caleb Thurston. In 1818 my great grandfather, Benjamin Franklin Buckingham, was born. In 1821 another son, Samuel, was born. His first wife war Sally Brunch. They were married but a few years until they were divorced because, according to court records, she ran off to Indiana. His second wife was named Jane Sell. A son, William, born in 1823, completed the seven children resulting from the Buckingham - Blancher marriage.
An Ohio history book lists Mashel Buckingham among the handful of pioneer settlers of Harrison Township, Darke County. The township had hardly been surveyed when they arrived about 1815 or 1816. On December 17, 1819 Mashel purchased from Conrad and Sarah Roberts of Greene County, Ohio a farm of 320 acres described thusly: West one-half of Section 32, Range 1, Harrison Township.
After the death of his first wife, Sarah Blancher, Mashel married a much younger woman, Sarah Gooden Pitenger and they proceeded to raise a second family of seven children. They were, in chronological order: Lydia, first married to a man named Furbish, then to a man named Forbes; Sally, first married to a man named Doloff, then to a man named Porterfield; Vina, who became the wife of James Hair; a son, Oren (1835-1911) who married Martha Chenoweth (1849-1901); Anna (1839) who married a man named Burgess; a son Lewis,, who died as a young man and lastly Harve (1844-1918) whose wife was named Arvilla (1859-1918). Harve fought in the Civil War and in later years he came to Union City to visit Jefferson Monroe Buckingham, my grandfather, on several occasions. As a lad I remember his visits. Both Harve and his wife and Oren and his wife are buried in the Hollansburg Cemetery.
A typed copy of Mashel's will, recorded April 5, 1855 and probated September 3, 1857, is included in this family record. It not only represents a typical will of those days but also it is an interesting source of this segment of our family history. Of surprising interest to me was the inclusion of instructions for disposal of his and her libraries which must of been of some consequence to them. Given the facts of Mashel's extensive book collection plus his father's given name, Bard, they might lead to a lot of speculation concerning a slight degree of culture existing between father and son.
One last observation would be that Mashel certainly did share in populating Darke County. Despite his prominence we have been unable to locate the place of his burial. A listing of all early burials in Darke County cemeteries fails to reveal that information. We are continuing the search as well as making a determined effort to secure more information concerning Mashel's life prior to coming to Ohio.
Having spent a great deal of my life in the cemetery profession it seemed important to me that graves of our ancestors be located, especially of great, great-grandfather, Mashel Buckingham. A book at the state library listing all marked graves in all of the old Darke County cemeteries failed to even list Mashel. Several inquiries brought me nothing. But again Uncle Clayton came to the rescue. He recalled that Milton Buckingham knew where they were buried in an isolated spot. So Uncle Clayton, with Milton Buckingham as guide, took Harry, Roe and Edgar Buckingham to the location in southwest Harrison Township, south of Hollansburg. Here they stopped at a farm house, went across a creek to the back of an orchard where they found nothing but fragments of tombstones, none of which were readable. Since it was common on practice in those days for families to establish burial grounds an their farms, we would have to conclude that this indeed was the last resting place for Mashel, his wives, and perhaps other relatives. Ironically, the farmer living there asked permission from Clayton and his carload to plow over the graves, something that would have been done anyway, with or without permission.From Joan Smith's Notes
Wash Buckingham was born June 17, 1781. His wife Sally was born 1789. He died March 31, 1855. He was 73 years, 9 months, and 14 days old when he died. He was born in Maryland. The following names and dates are in the old Buckingham Bible, and are apparently the 14 children of Wash Buckingham.

Often you would find the name of Wash Buckingham actually written Mash in the Darke County records. No one knows why.
A will, in Will Book A, page 218, Darke County Probate Court: Will of Wash Buckingham, dated September 1846; recorded April 5, 1855. Wife Sarah. Mentions minor children, but does not name. First wife's children: Catherine Emerson (formerly Catherine Buckingham); Levi Buckingham; Benjamin Buckingham; Mary Brown (formerly Mary Buckingham); and William Buckingham (great grandpa). Benjamin Buckingham is to serve as administrator of estate and to be guardian of minor heirs. Signed: Wash Buckingham, Witnesses: Albert Penland and David Gibbs. In Darke County Marriages is listed Wash Buckingham to Sally Pittenger, June 3, 1824 by Solomon Brodrick, J. P., Book 1. They say Sally is a nickname for Sarah.

Since writing and duplicating page 2 we have learned more about Mashel's second marriage and second family. Some family records list his second wife as Sally Gooden. However court records reveal that his second wife was Sally Pittenger and his will verifies that fact. They were married on June 3, 1824. From official health department records we learned that her maiden name was Sally Pemberton. Judging from all records her full name was Sally Pemberton Gooden Pittenger Buckingham, thus indicating she was twice married before her marriage to Mashel.
