MORE ON ERIC CONARD'S FAMILY ~

Web Masters Note:  Erik provides us with a little information on his research.  Below this introduction is the Genealogy for the Descendants of Elijah Phillips and Cynthia Goodwin.

I have three first cousins, Corbin Ross, Glenn Mallory and Lloyd Victor Armstrong,  all single, in their 40s, who live in Belchertown.  Their dad, my uncle,  Robert James Armstrong, plus Glenn & Lloyd, went to Ashfield on Veteran's Day, 1984.  I  visited my Uncle Bob there as had not seen him for some time.  He died  (as did my mom) a year or so later, buried in Belchertown.  We visited  the  Plain Cemetery, Beldingville, and the Spruce Corner one.  Bought a book at a  very charming lady's house.  The store front historical society building was where we were met with an indifferent woman...and she seemed to know less about Ashfield than I did.

We tromped around the cemetery in Buckland looking for Elijah, Jr.'s family  but the weather was so bad, the cemetery large, and never found him.  Since then I  have a lot of data on him and was surprised that even some of his progeny ended up in the unlikely hamlet of Bone Gap, Edwards Co, IL..

While most of Philip's kids are listed in the Ashfield Vital Records, most of Elijah's (if not all) were not.  I got  Samantha's date from her stone in WV, Ansel's from his in Bone Gap (so far as I know I am the only one to haS been there).  I never found Abiezor's until I read THE site, and  we have never found LYMAN anywhere.  Ina and previous researchers plus me have looked  for years to no avail.  Some of the others we got from biographers, etc.

Where was Elijah during those days?  Also, I looked for years and years to learn the  only one  of David's to have a middle name--Horace Augustus.  The Phillips family was one which simply did not give out middle names for several generations, and  many of the Burr and Goulds likewise.  As I am a stickler for detail I have  tried VERY HARD to get middle names and have been a bastard on spellings.

I didn't find any records of Florida, MA births, my Samantha's birth date came from her tombstone and most folks got her date from me.  Some people could not spell  and her name often appears as "Cemantha" and "Cementha" but in time most of us must settle for something.

Elbridge Burr was named for an old family  friend, Elbridge Gerry...Actually his uncle was named Elbridge Gerry Burr,  but my ancestor, his nephew, was given no middle name nor was his only full brother, Martin.  The name GERRY is pronounced like GARY, not JERRY, and the name  gerrymandering, taken from the senator, is likewise generally mispronounced.

The child of Elijah, named Mercy, was not named in the vital records of  Ashfield, just  "a daughter" and she died in her teens.  Also, in the vital records the birth  of Philips son ISRAEL (not Isreal) was entered as IRAD....I inspected the Original and  it was clearly ISRAEL, but someone obviously could not read it.

Elijah served in the Rev. War, the only one of Phillip's to do so. Years before a WV Phillips made a trip up to Ashfield and wrote up a history.   I have copied it and incorporated it into my records--and you have it all now, too.

Only one of the brothers of Philip & David ever visited them in Va.--Simeon.  Have never learned if the daughter of Anna Goodwin Scott Phillips was ever located, she is the one Anna left and returned to America, marrying David and having a  lot of sons.  Presume this girl was raised in Canada, no one seems to know.

~ Descendants of Elijah Phillips ~

Generation No. 1

1.  ELIJAH2 PHILLIPS  (PHILIP1) was born February 14, 1759 in Ashfield, Franklin, MA, and died 1840 in ,Lewis, VA.  He married CYNTHIA GOODWIN October 08, 1781 in Ashfield, Franklin, Massachusetts.  She was born July 31, 1766 in West Hartford, Hartford, CT, and died January 1839 in ,Lewis, VA.

Notes for ELIJAH PHILLIPS:
He left MA for Harrison Co., VA in 1814 but had land title problems, and moved over to Lewis Co., along with several other MA people. While he is surmised to have been buried at the old French Creek Cemetery, along with his wife, a marker has been placed in the Mulberry Ridge Phillips cemetery which was on the property of son Edwin.  This should not be confused with the Meade Dist. Phillips Cemetery, burial place of many of the David Phillips family.  Elijah had gone hunting in the spring of 1840 and died of exposure as he'd lost his way--was probably senile.  His dog returned.  Cutright's history has the story. THE GOODWIN FAMILY OF HARTFORD, CT., by Rev. Augustus Jessop, DD, says "Elijah Phillips removed from Ashfield after 1807 and in June 1817 resided in Randolph Co, WV. He is believed to have finally settled at French Creek, Upshur Co, WV, and is said to have died from cold, having become benumbed while hunting in the wood s." Elijah was a RW vet, service-proved, (DAR Patriot Index), and he was the only one of his family, largely Tory, to serve.  The tale of Capt. Philip Phillips and all of his sons being lined up for the inspection of Gen. Mattoon is hogwash, and they were not all over six feet tall. Elijah was 5'9" according to his RW records.  The Ashfield historical account of the Phillips family is to be considered skeptical at best.

Thanks to John Tilghman Cunningham for the Goodwin reference. There were supposed to have been 17 children born to the family, 3 of whom were unnamed.  Their births were not found recorded in Ashfield
(generally unnamed children were not recorded) so the order of births were arbitrarily chosen and gaps "filled in." In time, these records may become refined.  Future research may help some with some of the
named children, but I did inspect all the Ashfield originals myself during the visit to Ashfield in 1985.  The records are to be found in the Belding Library on Main Street. They've all been filmed, too. The Upshur history alludes to David Phillips having the most posterity who served in the Civil War.  Not so.  Elijah did, but as David had only sons, the name Phillips seemed preponderant.  Some of Elijah's grandchildren/great-grandchildren who were in the Civil War include d    Edwin, son of Ansel Phillips; Beecher and Wallace, sons of Edwi n Phillips; William and Benton Burr; Marshall, Watson, Jonathan and Joseph Gould; Almandus, Israel Brown, Stillman, Augustus Alonzo, Earl Elijah, Sanford, Daniel Webster and Edward/Edwin Young; Hubbard, John, Edwin D., and Wilbur D. Perry. We do not know if Elijah, Jr.'s four sons served, and a possibility of a grandson.  We do not know of Lyman's or Abizor's sons' service, nor potential grandsons' service.  And, there is ye t a     John and David Phillips, unidentified.  No more from David, b rother of Elijah, though.  We have already counted 21 of Elijah's descendants, and that is incomplete.  It is believed David's 20 descendant-list is complete.  Would make an interesting study/paper. If it is undertaken by a WV Wesleyan professor, for God's sake involve some of the locals who know the local families and spellings!

The burial place of Elijah is not certain, but a memorial to him was placed at the Mulberry Ridge Phillips cemeteries.  It is believed, then,he was buried in the Old French Creek Cemetery, destroyed by Walker Ervin. And, the Phillips family wanted a memorial.  No other cemetery seem s to fit at the time, hence this conclusion is drawn.

Notes for CYNTHIA GOODWIN:
Her father, Uriah Goodwin, was killed in Palmerstown,  NY in 1782, d uring the Rev. War.  Her sister, Anna, a widow of a Canadian soldier, marri ed David Phillips and also came to what is now Upshur County, West Virginia .  There is no stone to mark her grave.  She is believed buried at the Phillip s farm
cemetery on Laurel Fork, along with her husband, David, and a large n umber of descendants, mostly with unmarked stones.

The marker placed for Elijah at the Phillips Cemetery on Mulberry Ridge was done so in later years as the Old French Creek Cemetery no longer existed.  Had he been buried at the (new) French Creek cemetery there 'd have been no need to place it at Mulberry, they'd simply have erected one at French Creek Presbyterian, done by other families.

Children of ELIJAH PHILLIPS and CYNTHIA GOODWIN are:
2. i. ELIJAH JR.3 PHILLIPS, b. 1783, Ashfield, Franklin, MA; d. September 20, 1847, Buckland, Franklin, MA.
ii. MABEL PHILLIPS, b. 1785, Ashfield, Franklin, MA; d. Ashfield, Franklin, MA; m. BLISS FORBES, ,Massachusetts.

Notes for MABEL PHILLIPS:
!birth not recorded at Ashfield.  Her husband is referred to as Bliss Tarbush or Bliss Forbes.  I prefer to accept the latter.

Notes for BLISS FORBES:
!There seems to be some doubt as to his name, Forbes or Forbush. I have arbitrarily taken Forbes as that surname is around there and Forbush is not.  Simply poor reading in transcription, I think.

3. iii. ANSEL PHILLIPS, b. February 16, 1788, Ashfield, Franklin, MA; d. January 20, 1852, Bone Gap, Edwards, IL.
4. iv. ABIEZER PHILLIPS, b. Abt. 1789, Florida, MA; d. January 1832, Edwards Co., IL.
5. v. ELIZA PHILLIPS, b. Abt. 1791, Ashfield, Franklin, Massachusetts; d. December 13, 1835, Ridgeway, Orleans, New York.
6. vi. LYMAN PHILLIPS, b. Abt. 1793, Ashfield, Franklin, Massachusetts; d. ,Illinois.
vii. MERCY PHILLIPS, b. August 1794, Ashfield, Franklin, Massachusetts; d. April 23, 1808, Ashfield, Franklin, Massachusetts.

Notes for MERCY PHILLIPS:
!She is named "Mercy" in the Ellis genealogy.  Her death was recorded in the Ashfield vital records.  I inspected the originals also, and in each case only the fact that she was a daughter of Elijah Philips and
the dates were found.  I went to Plain cemetery there, where most of her relatives are buried but found no marker.  No vital records/recordings of the cemeteries list her either.  Since it was a very large family and not one of the recordings showed a "Mercy," it is a pretty safe guess that this girl was so named.  Her death date is disputed between 23 a nd 24 of April, 1808.  She was 13 years and 8 months old.

viii. LUCEBA PHILLIPS, b. Abt. 1796, Ashfield, Franklin, Massachusetts; d. ,Michigan; m. PARLEY SHUMWAY; d. ,Michigan.

Notes for LUCEBA PHILLIPS:
!birth not found recorded at Ashfield, although probably born there. Luceba became a very popular name in WV, and no doubt the Massachusetts folks influenced it.

Notes for PARLEY SHUMWAY:
!had 13 children, only 2 living to maturity:  Parley & Edwin

7. ix. CYNTHIA PHILLIPS, b. Abt. 1800, Ashfield, Franklin, Massachusetts; d. 1871, ,Upshur, West Virginia.
 x. PHILLIPS, b. Abt. 1800, MA; d. Abt. 1800, MA.

Notes for PHILLIPS:
!This is one of the three unnamed children, unlikely that their births were recorded, unlikely a tombstone, and placed in order where an obvious gap occurs, no more.

8. xi. SAMANTHA PHILLIPS, b. May 10, 1802, Florida, Berkshire, MA; d. January 13, 1871, French Creek, Upshur, WV.
9. xii. ADELIA PHILLIPS, b. Abt. 1803, ,MA; d. April 13, 1866, French Creek, Upshur, WV.
xiii. LYDIA PHILLIPS, b. Abt. 1804, ,Massachusetts; m. EARL HAWKS.

Notes for LYDIA PHILLIPS:
!During this period the family was living in Florida, MA along with several other Ashfield people, some of whom recorded the births of their children in Ashfield.  Not so here, so we guess.

10. xiv. EDWIN PHILLIPS, b. May 01, 1807, ,Massachusetts; d. September 01, 1881, French Creek, Upshur, West Viriginia.
xv. PHILLIPS, b. Abt. 1809, MA; d. Abt. 1809, MA.

Notes for PHILLIPS:
!not recorded in Ashfield births, deaths.  No stone found.  It is unlikely we'll find more inasmuch as the child was not named.  The placing of this child was arbitrary, as three were born unnamed and gaps were used.

xvi. JONATHAN PHILLIPS, b. Abt. 1810, ,Massachusetts; d. Abt. 1838, ,Lewis, Virginia.

Notes for JONATHAN PHILLIPS:
!We know he died of consumption, unmarried.  There is evidence of him living in 1830, not in 1840.  This makes sense, in that had he died after 1840, he'd probably have been buried in the (new) French Creek cemetery with a marker.  Prior to that time he'd have probably been buried in the old French Creek Cemetery, and that place is destroyed.  As he was not married, and bachelors were not common, one might further assume he died in his 20s, as he owned no land either.

xvii. PHILLIPS, b. Abt. 1812, MA; d. Abt. 1812, MA.

Notes for PHILLIPS:
!no recording in Ashfield for this unnamed child.  It was not the custom to record unnamed children who were stillborn, died at birth or shortly thereafter.  Arbitrarily placed as the last of the 17 children
as it is possible that Cynthia born children until she was in her mid-forties.  But, then the child could've been born in the 1790s also.
Twins were not found in the Phillips families.

Generation No. 2

2.  ELIJAH JR.3 PHILLIPS (ELIJAH2, PHILIP1) was born 1783 in Ashfield, Franklin, MA, and died September 20, 1847 in Buckland, Franklin, MA.  He married FANNY RUDE April 1804 in Ashfield, Franklin, Massachusetts.  She died May 06, 1862 in Ashfield, Franklin, MA.

Notes for ELIJAH JR. PHILLIPS:
!the eldest, he and his family kept in contact with the WV kin for a couple of generations or so.

Notes for ANSEL PHILLIPS:
!Birth date calculated from age at death on tombstone.  Personally visited by EPC.  Family all marked.  Recorded by Edwards Co. Gen. Soc. also. Ansel was an early settler of Bone Gap, originally called Yankee-town.  His sons Austin and Edwin apparently grew to maturity in Bone Gap, but left there.  EPC has visited the cemetery twice and the stones are deteriorating rapidly.  Census records of 1830-40-50 were checked.

Notes for OLIVE CROUCH:
!believed to have had no issue

Children of ANSEL PHILLIPS and ESTHER RICE are:
 i. OLIVE4 PHILLIPS, b. July 18, 1830, IN.
ii. ELIZA PHILLIPS, b. January 11, 1833, Edwards Co., IL; d. 1853; m. CHARLES BURNS LOUGH, August 1852.

Notes for CHARLES BURNS LOUGH:
!his name has been mis-read as Lingh, but Lough is correct.

iv. JONATHAN PHILLIPS, b. July 17, 1837, Bone Gap, Edwards, IL.

Notes for JONATHAN PHILLIPS:
!He is supposed to have died young, but I have not found his stone

 v. EDWIN PHILLIPS, b. April 26, 1840, Edwards Co., IL.

Notes for EDWIN PHILLIPS:
!not known whether he grew to maturity or served in the Civil War

vi. MATTHEW PHILLIPS, b. February 12, 1842, Bone Gap, Edwards, IL; d. July 12, 1860, Bone Gap, Edwards, IL.

Notes for MATTHEW PHILLIPS:
!has readable marker, catalogued by Edwards Co. Gen. Soc.  I have been to this cemetery twice, and agree with the readings.

vii. FRANCIS PHILLIPS, b. September 30, 1844, Bone Gap, Edwards, IL; d. January 24, 1864, Bone Gap, Edwards, IL.

Notes for FRANCIS PHILLIPS:
!his marker was very hard to read, and dates compared with Edwards County Gen. Soc. agree with my readings, two visits.  Unmarried. Not known whether he served in the Civil War or not.

viii. AUSTIN MAXWELL PHILLIPS, b. November 22, 1849, Bone Gap, Edwards, IL.

4.  ABIEZER3 PHILLIPS (ELIJAH2, PHILIP1) was born Abt. 1789 in Florida, MA, and died January 1832 in Edwards Co., IL.  He married HANNAH SADLER June 22, 1808 in Ashfield, Franklin, Massachusetts.  She was born August 03, 1792 in Ashfield, MA, and died April 01, 1843 in Edwards Co, IL.

Notes for ABIEZER PHILLIPS:
!Birth not recorded at Ashfield, believed born at Florida. He belonged to the French Creek Presbyterian Church and was probably buried in the old cemetery, along with parents.  Most of the family left WV.  Variant spelling of his name: Abizor.  His death not recorded in church records, but children's births are.  He was no longer alive in 1840.  Some believe he survived his wife, Hannah, who died 15 Nov 1834, recorded in the FC Presby. Ch. register. FC Presby. Church history published with some dates in it.  I have a copy and recently donated it to the Denver Public Library collection. His wedding date is the intention date as recorded in Ashfield.  The minister's return is not there.  He is believed to have arrived in
WV with three children (Lovina, Eliza and Joseph).  The 1820 Census for Lewis Co. shows Abizor, 26/45, Joseph, 0/10; Hannah, 26/45, Lovina, 1 0/16, Eliza, 0/10, Hannah, 0/10 and Electa, 0/10 The 1830 Census shows Abizor, 40/50, Joseph, 15/20, Elijah, 5/10, Sam uel, 0/5; Hannah, 30/40, Eliza, 15/20, Hannah, 10/15, Electa, 10/15, Delia, 0/5.  Lovina had married in 1826.

The family was not found in 1840; we know that Lovina and Abizor were dead by this time.  We found no irregularities in family size, a ges, names, censuses compared with the French Creek Presbyterian Church records.

It is believed (finally!) that the list of children is correct and complete. It is virtually certain that Abizor died in French Creek in the earl y 30s but his grave has not been found;may be in the old French Creek Cemne tery, now destroyed. Ina M. Atchison, Campbell, CA, descendant, has made great
strides on this family, clearing up most questions...1999, Erik Conard The IGI says he wed at Plainfield, Hampshire Co, MA 18 Jul 1809

Notes for HANNAH SADLER:
!The Sadler family bible record, sent by Ina Atchison, descendant. Her tombstone in the Trinity Cem., says died Apr 1, 1843, 50-2-29, in considerable contrast to the Sadler Bible record.  This was from the readings by Shelton and Pistole in 1979.  Using their recordings her birth would be calculated as 3 Jan 1793.  Using her bible date, the age would have been 50-7-29.  I think they mis-read the months and came up with 2 instead of 7.

Ina has in the Sadler Genealogy and the 2001 Phillips site that Hannah was born in Ashfield, 25 Sep 1788 and died in Edwards Co. 1 Apr 1843 the 7 Oct 1979 reading was by Carl & Lois Shelton, on property then
owned by a Ford family, originally the site of the Yankeetown Trinity Congregational Church.  Yankeetown's name was changed to Bone Gap.  The cemetery was generally known as the Trinity or Rice Cemetery, long since abandoned

Children of ABIEZER PHILLIPS and HANNAH SADLER are:
11. i. LOVINA4 PHILLIPS, b. January 19, 1809, Ashfield, Franklin, MA; d. November 16, 1834, French Creek, Lewis, VA.
12. ii. ELIZA PHILLIPS, b. Abt. 1811, ,Massachusetts; d. ,Kansas.
iii. JOSEPH PHILLIPS, b. Abt. 1813, ,Massachusetts; d. 1832, French Creek, Lewis, Virginia.

Notes for JOSEPH PHILLIPS:
!believed unmarried, death recorded in church records, believed to have been buried in old French Creek cemetery, now destroyed.

13. iv. HANNAH PHILLIPS, b. Abt. 1815, ,Virginia; d. Abt. 1859, Bone Gap, Edwards, Illinois.
14. v. ELECTA PHILLIPS, b. 1819, ,Lewis, Virginia; d. 1852, ,Edwards, Illinois.
15. vi. ELIJAH PHILLIPS, b. February 05, 1825, Lewis Co, VA; d. March 12, 1875, Diamond Springs, Morris, KS.
vii. SAMUEL PHILLIPS, b. Abt. 1826, ,Lewis, Virginia.
16. viii. ADELIA PHILLIPS, b. Abt. 1827, Lewis Co, VA.
ix. MABEL PHILLIPS, b. Abt. 1828, French Creek, Lewis, Virginia.

Notes for MABEL PHILLIPS:
!only reference found is in FC Presbyterian christening of 30 Apr 1829 and she cannot be figured in 1830 census females, so possibly she died between the 1829 christening and the 1830 census.

5.  ELIZA3 PHILLIPS (ELIJAH2, PHILIP1) was born Abt. 1791 in Ashfield, Franklin, Massachusetts, and died December 13, 1835 in Ridgeway, Orleans, New York.  She married PHILO ELMER Abt. 1811 in Ashfield, Franklin, Massachusetts.  He died October 27, 1841 in Ridgeway, Orleans, New York.

Notes for ELIZA PHILLIPS:
!The Elmer family still has Elmer kin in Ashfield and also in Upshur Co, WV

Child of ELIZA PHILLIPS and PHILO ELMER is:
 i. ADONIJAH4 ELMER, b. November 27, 1812, Ashfield, Franklin, Massachusetts; d. February 10, 1883, French Creek, Upshur; m. MARIA WELD; b. September 02, 1812, Reading, Vermont; d. April 18, 1890, French Creek, Upshur, West Virginia.

Notes for ADONIJAH ELMER:
!moved to FC 1866, his six children all b Ridgeway, NY, Nathema Louise (1838-46), Amelia Maria (1840-41), Ervin Francis, Elon Marson, William Henry and Clara Maria (1852-80). Many descendants listed in copies of FC Pioneer.

6.  LYMAN3 PHILLIPS (ELIJAH2, PHILIP1) was born Abt. 1793 in Ashfield, Franklin, Massachusetts, and died in ,Illinois.  He married JANE WELLS March 22, 1821 in ,Gibson, Indiana.  She was born in ,Kentucky.

Notes for LYMAN PHILLIPS:
!I have totally been unable to find him, he left WV early and was in IN by the early 1820s.  Variant spelling of given name: Layman. The 1830 census, Edwards Co, IL, shows Lyman Phillips, 30/40, male, 0/5, male, 0/5; female, 30/40, female 5/10 and female, 5/10.  This would fit the 1821 marriage, first two being girls, second two, boys. But other records say he had a daughter Pleasant and a daughter Cynthia by his first wife and sons Henry and Leroy by a second wife.  There was a "Plez" Phillips, a male, who settled in Diamond Springs, Morris Co, KS, place of many persons of Massachusetts lineage who came to Yankee- town, later called Bone Gap, in Edwards Co, IL, then on to Kansas. There is a Pleasant Phillips, age 24, in the Edwards Co, IL '70 census. Searching 1840 census for family in IL, MN, IN was futile.  The 1850 searches in the same states yielded no clues.  I have no dates for the four children, mentioned in Claude Sumner Phillips' manuscript, and the Edwards Co (IL) does mention Lyman by name but nothing else The name of the second wife of Lyman has not come to light, either.

Notes for JANE WELLS:
!Her mother, Hannah Phillips, was not mentioned as a relative nor did any of the MA Phillips' seem to have gone to KY.  There is no evidence of Jane and Lyman being related through the Phillips'.

Children of LYMAN PHILLIPS and JANE WELLS are:
 i. PHILLIPS4, b. Abt. 1822.
 ii. PHILLIPS, b. Abt. 1824.
 iii. PHILLIPS, b. Abt. 1826.
 iv. PHILLIPS, b. Abt. 1828.

7.  CYNTHIA3 PHILLIPS (ELIJAH2, PHILIP1) was born Abt. 1800 in Ashfield, Franklin, Massachusetts, and died 1871 in ,Upshur, West Virginia.  She married PASCAL PAOLI YOUNG January 03, 1818 in French Creek, Lewis, Virginia.  He was born October 18, 1794 in Charlemont, Franklin, MA, and died January 19, 1852 in French Creek, Lewis, VA.

Notes for CYNTHIA PHILLIPS:
!her burial place is unknown.  She has been referred to as having been born in 1801, but no recording has been found of her birth nor no tombstone to guide us.  The 1870 census might be of help.

Notes for PASCAL PAOLI YOUNG:
!had at least 62 grandchildren, not known are Lucinda's. Birthdates are from IGI.  Upshur Co census of 1860 was consulted, #19 0. Many Young families and info are found in various issues of the Pioneer,
publication of the French Creek Pioneers Ass'n, c/o Upshur Co. Hist. Society, Buckhannon. William Robert Elms (b 1931) has worked many years and has much info on Pascal P. Young family.

Children of CYNTHIA PHILLIPS and PASCAL YOUNG are:
 i. SYLVESTER4 YOUNG.
17. ii. LYMAN PHILLIPS YOUNG, b. March 03, 1819, ,Lewis, Virginia.
iii. ALONZO AUGUSTUS YOUNG, b. September 08, 1820, ,Lewis, Virginia; d. April 15, 1866, Neoga, Cumberland, Illinois; m. MARTHA ANN CLARK, November 22, 1848, ,Lewis, Virginia; b. May 26, 1830, E. Cambridge, MA; d. May 31, 1891, Neoga, Cumberland, IL.

Notes for ALONZO AUGUSTUS YOUNG:
!I have found some records saying his name was Augustus Thomas Young, who is listed as a son of Pascal, p 54, 111 in FC Presb. history, but Wm. R. Elms, descendant and genealogist says it is Alonzo Augustus Young--I am taking his work. There is an Alonzo A. Young who m 19 Sep 1883, Lizzie R. Moody/Woody. Who could he be?  Elms' ancestor went to Illinois at an earlier time.

Notes for MARTHA ANN CLARK:
!had 7 children

18. iv. ELIJAH EARL YOUNG, b. May 12, 1822, ,Lewis, Virginia.
 v. SANFORD B YOUNG, b. November 28, 1823, ,Lewis, Virginia; d. January 15, 1857; m. PHEBE TAYLOR, March 09, 1848, ,Lewis, Virginia; b. Abt. 1824.

Notes for SANFORD B YOUNG:

8.  SAMANTHA3 PHILLIPS (ELIJAH2, PHILIP1) was born May 10, 1802 in Florida, Berkshire, MA, and died January 13, 1871 in French Creek, Upshur, WV.  She married (1) MARTIN CUDWORTH BURR March 01, 1821 in ,Lewis, Virginia.  He was born June 18, 1798 in Bridgewater, Plymouth, MA, and died 1825 in ,Lewis, VA.  She married (2) NATHAN GOULD November 20, 1828 in ,Lewis, Virginia.  He was born March 19, 1776 in Charlemont, Franklin, MA, and died September 03, 1856.

Notes for SAMANTHA PHILLIPS:
!One will find various spellings of her name, such as Cementha, Cemantha, but Samantha is proper.  Her marriage to Nathan Gould, Jr. was mis-rea when the marriages were printed.  Hard to read as well as unfamiliarity with local families, "Burr" was mistaken for "Primm," and so entered . An inspection with the original + knowledge of correct name confirms easily. Samantha spent her last years with son Joseph

Notes for MARTIN CUDWORTH BURR:
!No one seems to know where he is buried.  When the information was f urnished for the Charles Burr Todd genealogy of the Burr family, only the yea r was given and no place, hinting no place known.  If he was not buried o n his own farm (if he owned one, and he died at about 27), he is likely at the old French Creek Cemetery, then in use, without a marker.  This would appear to be logical, the widow only in her mid-20s with two little boys and funds in short supply in this newly-settled locale.  Mrs. Idell Snodgrass, hired by EPC in the 1960s for research, claimed the "Nicum," "Nucum" or "Nixon " farm as
the place, but I have not been able to locate nor was anything like t hat included in the Upshur Genealogy Society's cemetery recordings.  As I result, I would infer that if this place did exist then there is unlikely a marker. Future research should include pinpointing his residence as of 1825 , going there and asking the present occupant if they know of any graves on the premises.  If not, then Old French Creek Cemetery is the logical choice. I have not pursued this in depth.

Notes for NATHAN GOULD:
There is a discrepancy as to his death date, 1853 or 1856, and also a s to whether he died in Albion, Edwards Co, IL, or in (West) Virginia.  He is, buried in West Virginia, and has a marked grave.
He had family of eight by his first wife, Esther Alden (desc. of John Alden), and eight children by Samantha.  Her children, two boys, by Burr, were reared and treated as Gould siblings.  Nathan, Jr. was irked by the large number of his first family moving west, principally to IL and MN, and he essentially cut them out of his will. Between them all, there were 1 8 kids. Much work needs to be done to solidify the birth dates of the second family.

!He was buried on his farm on Mulberry Ridge, and there are a few of his kin there, also.  A marker for Elijah, his father, was placed there, although he his thought to be buried in the now-destroyed Old
French Creek cemetery. The 1840 (p 143), 1850 (#1240), 1860 (#1145) and 1870 (#159) censuses were consulted. Claude Spencer Phillips' manuscript was read, some IG I, some from Denver Public Library, and, of course, Virginia Bly Hoover.

16.  ADELIA4 PHILLIPS (ABIEZER3, ELIJAH2, PHILIP1) was born Abt. 1827 in Lewis Co, VA.  She married JULIUS STANLEY December 23, 1843 in Albion, Edwards, Illinois.  He was born Abt. 1820 in ,Ohio.

Notes for ADELIA PHILLIPS:
!she probably died in Kansas, perhaps near Diamond Springs, Morris Co., where a good many of West Virginians went after passing through Edwards Co, IL.

Notes for JULIUS STANLEY:
!Francis, son, is "Frank" in one census, "Hattie" is probably Harriet. Also in 1850 family is Jonathan Phillips, 13, b IN, perhaps a child of Lyman Phillips, definitely not son of Ansel. Family went to Minn. in
early 1860s but came back, left again. There are several Stanleys in Bone Gap cem.  Census, 1850, #189, p 25, Edwards Co; 1860, Edwards Co, #873 and 1870, Morris Co, KS, #52, next to Elijah Phillips family.

The Rice Cemetery (also called Trinity cem., long since abandoned) recordings show "Willie"as dying 17 Dec 1862, at 9-2-24.  The 1860 census shows William at 4 and Albert at 6.  I think that the stones were mis-read and lack of understanding of spacing and carving contributed, along with perhaps a hard-to-read stone.  This family was not found in Morris Co, KS in 1880.  Thanks to Mary Jack Challacombe of Columbia, IL, long-time Edwards Co. researcher and Jack descendant.

20.  ELBRIDGE4 BURR (SAMANTHA3 PHILLIPS, ELIJAH2, PHILIP1) was born September 30, 1821 in Lewis Co, VA, and died June 15, 1890 in Upshur Co, WV.  He married NANCY JANE JACK November 20, 1841 in ,Lewis, Virginia.  She was born September 27, 1821 in Pendleton Co., VA, and died February 13, 1900 in Hinkelsville, Upshur, WV.

Notes for ELBRIDGE BURR:
!His birth date calculated from age at death on tombstone, 68-8-15. Neither Elbridge nor his brother Martin had middle names although they  were named for Burr uncles who did.  Massachusetts families did not give    middle names, as a rule, unless they were for someone o r a family connection--like a maiden name .

Elbridge was a highly- regarded carpenter; he built the French Creek Presbyterian Church--which burned down and was later re-built .    Their marriage has been found in the Marriage Book 2, p 7 2, Lewis Co, (now West) VA.  From the History of Sago, E. R. Grose, 1926. p  9:

"Another large family of young people lived at the close of the Civil War in the George Clark house.  (The Clarks had gone to Buckhannon li ve.)  This was the Elbridge Burr family.  The father was known as Little Elbridge to distinguish him from Elbridge G[erry] Burr [an uncle] , who lived where Adrian is now situated.  There were William and Benton who had reached home from the Union army, three younger boys and four girls.  One of girls married Gabriel Bean of Indian Camp,  another, Luke Bosley, also of   Indian Camp.  [Luther] Joseph, the youngest [not so] s pent most of his life  in W. VA." The  house  burned down many year s ago but there is a maple grove remaining.  This is close to the Presbyterian Church in French Creek.

[NOTE:  The children were William, Samantha A., Benton, Ladassa Jane , Anna, Ella, Spencer Jack, Charles Wesley, Mary M., Mary Ellen, and Theodosi a Belle, in order]

Notes for NANCY JANE JACK:
!she was dead by the time the 1900 census was taken but, by law, was required to be counted as she was living on l Jan 1900.  She was a double-count, in that she is shown in the household of Gabriel Bean
as well as with her son Luther Joseph.  Claimed to have had 12 children 7 living.  The deceased children were Samantha, Benton, Mary M. and Theodosia, perhaps an unnamed child, making the twelve. Owing to the spacings, I would be hard pressed to find a spot for the other, but I'd guess it was short-term and unnamed child.

Nancy Jane could read and write and I have seen a small Bible she in-scribed for her son Spencer.  I have yet to locate her grave, but she is likely beside her husband; there is no marker.  There is a good chance that son Luther Joseph and his wife are there also, in unmarked graves

Notes for MARTIN -NONE- BURR:
!most of his family remained in WV longer than brother Elbridge's. His birth was calculated from his tombstone.  He was related to his wife, Louisa May See, through the Leonard-Burr connection.  Contact       with the Elbridge Burr family was lost for several generations.

Notes for LOUISA MAY SEE:
!There is a discrepancy in her birth.  IGI says 1821. She was living with son Claudius in 1910, and at her death on 11 Jan 1918 she was said to be 88 years and 10 days (calc: 1 Jan 1830).  She was a first cousin once removed to her husband, Burr line.  She is listed as being 30 years old in the 1860 census (#894, Meade dist.).  All successive censuses are in the Meade dist.  Charles Burr Tood's BURR FAMILY has
them on p 364.  We have not located her grave which is probably unmarked. Her birth is likely in 1830 or 1831 as her older brother, Claudius B . See, was born in 1829

His obituary does not list place of burial.  He went by the name of "Joe." His wife survived him, and his funeral was held at Pleasant Dale Church, so it is likely he is buried there, along with his parents in an unmarked grave.  And, his wife might be there also.

There was mention of one grand daughter who was living with her mother, but we cannot know which one she is, Upshur births say he was b 26 Aug 1853 In the 1900 census, Buckhannon Dist. #356, they declared they'd been married 14 years, 3 children were born and 3 living.  Uncle Joe was a salesman.  All this information is obtainable but getting someone to undertake it is hard.
