James Hargraves was born ca. 1824. He married Diana Octavia Lay on December 2, 1844 in Daviess Co., MO. The marriage record lists his name as "Hartgrove." James is said to have been born in Missouri. He reportedly left his wife and family and moved back to Missouri during the 1860s.

K, 64th VA Mounted Infantry during the Civil War. He was paroled at Cumberland Gap, TN on April 28, 1865. Benny is buried at Hale Cemetery, Jinks, KY.
