Memories of Calderdale

Ripponden Stones County School

by

Thelma Woosey

Ripponden Stones County School was about 1 mile out of Ripponden on the Rochdale Road. It no longer exists as a school.

During the war years and after, this school had a canteen in the basement where 5 ladies cooked dinners for the 4 schools in the area: 2 in Ripponden, 1 in Barkisland and 1 in Rishworth. These ladies (my mother was the cook) made over 800 dinners every day on coal-fired ovens, as there was no electricity in that vicinity in those days. The cost to each child was 2/6d.

The headmaster was Mr Foster.

You should have seen the garden we had which the big boys had to look after.

We also had a Pig club. The Government allowed you to have one and you had to keep two pigs one for the club and one for the Government.
