[1890-1917] He lived at 19 Upper Lane, Northowram.

He worked for Joshua Smithson at India Buildings, Halifax.

During World War I, he enlisted [October 1914], and served as a Private with the Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment).

He was wounded twice.

He died 28th December 1917 (aged 27).

He is remembered on the Memorial at Halifax Town Hall Books of Remembrance

Brooke, Albert Edward
[1888-1916] Son of George Barker Brooke.

He was a popular bass vocalist, and a member of several choirs, including the Sowerby Bridge Wesleyan Mission School, the choir of St George's Church, Sowerby, the choir of Christ Church, Sowerby Bridge, the Sowerby Bridge Choral Society, and the J. T. Town Opera Company

and worked as

a cotton piecer [1901], a cotton spinning mule piecer [1911], and employed by W. & R. K. Lee Limited.

During World War I, he enlisted immediately after War broke out [October 1914], and served as a Corporal with the 8th Battalion Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment).

He was in the Dardanelles, Egypt, and France.

He was killed in action on the Somme [30th September 1916].

He was buried at the Regina Trench Cemetery, Grandcourt [IX J 17].

He is remembered on the Memorial at Saint George's Church, Sowerby, and on the W. & R. K. Lee Limited Roll of Honour

[1849-1922] Youngest son of Joseph Brooke.

Born in Northowram.

He was Quarry-owner, stone merchant and brick manufacturer (employer).

In [Q2] 1898, he married Rebecca [1854-1933] from Garforth, in Dewsbury.

Probate records show that he left an estate valued at £7,241

They had no children.

The family lived at Fenny Royd House, Hipperholme [1911].

Living with them in 1911 were nieces Ethel Hunter [b 1884], May Atkinson [b 1894], nephews Frank Brooke [b 1888] (stone merchant), and Joseph A. Brooke [b 1894] (clerk in stone business)

[1879-1920] Son of Mary Ann & Wright Brooke

Born in Liversedge.

On 27th February 1902, he married Annie Louisa Sutcliffe [1881-1959] at St James's Church, Halifax.

They had no children.

They lived at 8 Birks Hall Lane, Lee Bridge, Halifax.

During World War I, he served as a Private with the Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment). He transferred to the Labour Corps.

He died in Halifax [23rd February 1920] (aged 40).

He was buried at Illingworth Moor Wesleyan Chapel [b 17 211]

Brooke, Charles
[18??-18??] Of Rastrick. When the Bridge End Congregational Church of 1779 was replaced by the present building in 1856, he bought the old chapel building and rebuilt it on Hangram Field for use as a chapel-of-ease for Brighouse Parish Church. The chapel subsequently became St Paul's Chapel

Born in Brighouse.

He was a postal clerk [1873].

On 19th June 1873, he married Mary Ellen Ambler [1850-1930] of Brighouse, in Rastrick.

Architect whose work included Thornhill Briggs Methodist New Connexion Chapel [1896], Brighouse Post Office in Park Street [1900], and Assembly Rooms, Brighouse [1906].

On 14th September 1900, he married Clara Jane [18??-1900]

Brooke, Edward Vanrenen Ingham
[1876-1901] BA.

Son of Rev Joshua Ingham Brooke.

He was educated at Charterhouse & Magdalen College Oxford. He represented Oxford & Cambridge against Yale & Harvard in the long jump.

During the South African Wars, he served as a Lieutenant with the 2nd Battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry.

He was killed at Brakenlaagte, Transvaal [30th October 1901] (aged 25)  when they were cut off by the Boers as they were relieving Colonel Benson's column.

He is remembered on the Halifax Parish Church South African War Memorial, and on West View Park War Memorial

[18??-1???] He was Surveyor and Inspector of Nuisances for the Brighouse Local Board / Borough Surveyor for Rastrick [1894].

In [Q3] 1890, he married Martha Jane Heslop in Dewsbury

[1886-1918] His parents lived at 12 Alegar Street, Brighouse.

He was a later with J. Smithies & Sons, Great Horton, Bradford.

During World War I, he enlisted [4th August 1914], and served as a Sergeant with the 2nd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment.

He died in a fire in the support trenches [5th January 1918] (aged 32).

He was buried at the Railway Dugouts Burial Ground (Transport Farm) [G 11].

He is remembered on Clifton War Memorial, on Brighouse War Memorial, and in the book Clifton War Memorial

Born in Wakefield.

He was a grinder of Sowerby Street, Sowerby [1885] / a general labourer [1891] / a cotton card room jobber [1901] / a cotton under carder [1911].

In 1885, he married Ellen Ann Sykes Rayner [1865-1???] at Halifax Parish Church.


Ellen Ann, of Sowerby Street, Sowerby, was born in Malton / Melton / Meltham, the daughter of James Rayner, plate layer

During World War I, he served as a Private with the 2nd Battalion Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment).

He died of wounds in the UK [28th March 1915].

He is remembered on the Memorial at Halifax Town Hall Books of Remembrance

During World War I, he served as a Lance Corporal with the 2nd Battalion Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment).

He died 6th May 1915.

He was buried at the Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension, Nord [II A 156].

He began work at Brookfoot Corn Mill before setting up his own business at Brooke's Mill in 1826.

He married Mary [1781-1867].

He died 26th March 1855.

Brooke, John
[1819-1870] Son of John Brooke.

He carried on the family milling business after his father's death. He lived at the family home, The Rydings, Brighouse.

In 1861, he was the Constable for the township of Hipperholme-cum-Brighouse. He raised money for the unemployed and poor of the district.

In 1847, he married Emily Higham.


Emily was the daughter of George Higham

In his will, he left provisions for the construction of four almshouses near Lane Head Recreation Ground.

Son of John Brooke.

He was in service at St Katherine's, Northampton.

He died 31st May 1889.

His body was brought back to Brighouse for burial at St Martin's, Brighouse

Local historian of the Brighouse district.

In 1842, he married Grace Aspinall [1821-1895] in Halifax.

In [Q3] 1859, he married Grace Charlotte Godby in Bath

Brooke, Margaret
[1828-1898] Daughter of Sammey Drake Brooke.

She was a power loom weaver [1851] / a cook in the household of Henry W. Blackburn (public accountant) in Horsforth [1861].

On 10th June 1849, Margaret (spinster) had her son William baptised at Bradford Parish Church.

In 1871, Margaret was living with son William and his family in Brighouse

Brooke, Mary Ann
[17??-18??] Daughter of Edward Brooke.

They lived at Birks Hall – which she inherited from her mother – and also at Armley House. The principal entrance to Birks Hall bears the monogram of Mrs GottM A G – suggesting that she altered and rebuilt the house.

Brooke, Newton
[1856-1935] JP.

Middle son of Joseph Brooke.

Born in Queensbury [19th July 1856].

He was educated at Hipperholme Grammar school / Chairman of Joseph Brooke Limited / MD of the Nonslip Stone Company / a stone, granite & brick merchant & manufacturer [1911] / director and a founder of the Leeds Fireclay Company Limited / director of the Brighouse Brick, Tile & Stone Company Limited / a member of the St John [No 1736] Masonic Lodge / an Alderman.

In 1903, he succeeded his brother Willie as head of Joseph Brooke Limited.

In March 1890, Miss Hannah Haley of Northowram claimed £2,000 damages for breach of promise from him. By mutual consent, a verdict was returned for Miss Haley for £700.

On 16th September 1897, he married Edith Sutcliffe.


Edith was the youngest daughter of William Sutcliffe of Ingfield House, Odsal, Bradford

He married Beatrice Harriet [1860-19??].

In 1897, he married Annie, daughter of Abraham Sharpe.

They lived at 10 Park Terrace, Lightcliffe [1902].

On 20th August 1903, he was killed in a railway accident in Lightcliffe tunnel.

After his death, his brother Newton became head of the family business
