These were originally small clubs – typically with around 30 members – who paid a regular subscription to raise funds to build club houses. A ballot decided which member should receive the funds, and the society was wound up when all the members had built their house.
In 1926, the Courier recorded that Halifax had 13 societies with around 22,000 members
