to the
Calderdale Companion

Around 1390 have kindly sent me several thousand pieces of information for inclusion in the Calderdale Companion

If you wish to send me information, additions and/or corrections, please send me an email

When you are sending information – especially when it's about your forebears and ancestors – it is most useful if you could observe the following points

• For someone who is already mentioned on the Calderdale Companion, please quote the Internal Reference Id of that person – this Reference Number will be displayed when you position your mouse over the keyword in the entry for that individual

  This will ensure that the information is attached to the correct person

• If you are sending information about an individual who currently has no presence on the website, the ideal form is something like that shown form entitled Sending details of your forebears

  Son of Jonathan Smith [1490-1550].

  (Life, career, achievements and other details of the individual) 

  On 1st January 1540, he married Mary Brown [1520-1602] of Heptonstall, in Halifax.

  Children:

  1. John
  2. Mary

  The family lived at Stoodley Place, Heptonstall [1550]

   
  • You might also send a similar entry for the parents, spouse and children of the individual

  • This format is much easier and quicker to handle than long narrative texts and family histories ... and less prone to misinterpretation

  • The section of the life, career, achievements and other details of the individual, is probably most of interest. Please include as many details as you can. Entries comprising only

    Son of...
    
    Married ...
    
    Children ...
    
    Died ...
    

    throw little light on the family or on their life and times

  • To prevent the volume of information growing to a formidable size, I only like to include families and individuals who were active in the Calderdale district, ignoring any who did not enter the district and any who were born outside the district.

    I frequently use phrases such as

    Born in Lancashire
    Born in Calcutta, India

    and

    He left the district to live in Lincolnshire
    She emigrated to Australia
    The family moved out of the district

    for any borderline cases

  • I do not like to include dates of birth of other life events without the individuals' express permission

• Please help me to avoid misunderstanding your message

  • Please be careful when using pronouns ... they are the bain of my life. Worst of all are sentences such as

    John Smith [born 1825] had a son William. He was a blacksmith

    which can be ambiguous. Whom does He refer to here? John or William? It might be clearer to write

    John Smith [born 1825] had a son William. John was a blacksmith

  • Another example:

    John Smith [born 1825] had a son John [born 1950]. John was a blacksmith

    would be better written as

    John Smith [born 1825] had a son John [born 1950]. John [1825] was a blacksmith

  • Several short paragraphs are much clearer and easier to interpret than long, dense paragraphs of text

• For other entries – such as churches, houses, buildings, pubs, mills, schools and/or places – a brief description of the major features and location is sufficient
• If you prefer to cut and paste a section of the Calderdale Companion and make your corrections/changes there, please make your changes clear – by highlighting them or by using a coloured background
• If you have your own website or online source of information, please send me the URL for inclusion on the Calderdale Companion
• If you wish to submit photographs or illustrations for inclusion on the Calderdale Companion, please send these as scanned .JPG images and a note of when the photograph was taken
• If you wish to submit your own Memories and Reminiscences for inclusion on the Calderdale Companion, please send me an email with the text either as an attachment in Word (or similar) format, or simply in the body of the email.

  Don't worry about the spelling, punctuation or grammar
