Prehistoric Calderdale

There is considerable local evidence of prehistoric human activity

• Mesolithic implements have been found at Soyland, on Saltonstall Moor, and at Widdop
• Neolithic artefacts and Bronze Age implements have been found at Norland Moor, Ringstone, West Vale, Warley, Midgley and Wadsworth, and at Blackheath Barrow, Stansfield. Many of these were near the Long Causeway
• There is evidence of another prehistoric trackway from Blackstone Edge to Sowerby Bridge
• The Celtic tribes – notably the Brigantes – have also left remains – such as stone heads – at Walsden and other parts of the district
• Tree stumps – remnants of Iron Age clearances can be seen in the peat on the moors above Cragg Vale
• From the 6th century AD, the Scandinavians had reached the area, sailing up the Humber and the tributaries, including the Calder
