Smithies, Albert
[18??-1???] Waste dealer at West Vale.

In February 1886, he was fined £75 for assault on Alfred Schofield, a Halifax saddler.

The Assizes heard that

on 8th July [?] last, the 2 men, unknown to each other, were members of a group which left the Northgate Hotel. One of the group threw a snow ball [in July?] which struck Schofield. He went to Smithies's group and asked what they meant, whereupon Smithies struck Schofield with his stick, knocking out his right eye. Smithies also attacked Schofield's friend, who in turn knocked him down.

Medical evidence showed that Schofield would be permanently blind in his right eye, and his left eye was also in danger

[1880-1938] Born in Stainland.

He was a joiner [1910].

On 12th November 1910, he married Elizabeth Hollas in Stainland.

[1813-1867] A worsted spinner of Bradford.

On 7th March 1837, he married Grace Salt at St Peter's Church, Bradford (Bradford Cathedral).

Charles was declared bankrupt [1840], and Grace left him and went back to live with her parents.

The couple had separated by October 1840, and, on 1st October 1840, Charles went to her parents' house and made an attempt to stab Daniel Salt several times.

Charles was committed to Yorkshire Spring Assizes at York for trial.

He died at Wolverhampton [1867] (aged 54) 

Grace died at Cheadle [20th July 1873] Probate records show that he left effects valued at under £300 [Resworn under £1,500]. The will was proved by daughters Annie Grace & Maude Alice and George Salt of Saltaire

He was a worsted stuff manufacturer in partnership with his brother James Smithies, as Jonathan & James Smithies.

On 11th May 1843, Jonathan was charged with having robbed John Jennings of Allerton, on 12th January 1843. Jennings described how he was robbed


on the highway near his home by 3 tall men with blackened faces, of a purse, 3 sovereigns, a pocket book and 2 pawn tickets
 

but


circumstances came out in evidence tending to show that the charge was trumped up
 

and Jonathan was acquitted.

He was an Alderman of the West Riding County Council / Chairman of the local board [1858-1870] / a woollen cloth manufacturer with J. & J. Smithies [1871].

He established Joseph Smithies & Son Limited at Albert Mills, Elland.

He owned Bank Bottom Mill, Elland and property in Westgate, Elland

On 31st March 1853, he married Elizabeth Hawkyard at Halifax Parish Church.

Before there were local banks in Elland, Elizabeth collected the rates for the local authority and held these until she found time to take them to Halifax. Because there were no trams or trains, she would walk into Halifax, and despite the risks, she refused to have an escort.

When she died 11th March 1921 (aged 91), she was said to be Elland's oldest inhabitant.

Smithies, Norman Wharton
[1893-1920] Son of Joseph Smithies.

Members of the family were buried at Mount Zion Methodist Chapel, Ogden

During World War I, he served as a Lance Corporal with the 1st/4th Battalion Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment).

He died 2nd October 1920 (aged 27).

Smithies, Oliver
[1925-] Geneticist and Nobel Prize winner.

Born in Halifax.

He was educated at Copley Primary School and at Heath Grammar School [1936-1943].

He became an American citizen.

In 1980, he was co-pilot in a Cessna aircraft that broke records for crossing the Atlantic.

Prof Smithies is credited with the invention of gel electrophoresis [1955], and the simultaneous discovery, with Mario Capecchi, of the technique of homologous recombination of transgenic DNA with genomic DNA.

He won the Nobel Prize in Physiology / Medicine [2007].

In July 2010, a blue plaque in his honour was unveiled at Copley Primary School

He was a commercial clerk [1873] / a brewery cashier at St John's House, St John's Lane, Halifax [1891] / director & company secretary of Thomas Ramsden & Son Limited [1894, 1895].

On 27th March 1873, he married Martha Jane Charnock at Halifax Parish Church.

[1840-1896] Born in Elland.

He played an heroic rôle in the assault of Sarah Ann Burrow & Martha Ann Burrow.

In December 1859

the young man whose conduct was so praiseworthy at the time of the shocking outrage

in response to a respectably-signed requisition, was presented with a watch – bearing a suitable inscription – and a Bible.

On 3rd June 1862, he (possibly) married Sarah Ann Burrow at Halifax Parish Church.

In September 1834, Valentine was returning from Halifax market at a late hour when, between Ambler Thorn and Raggalds Inn, he was attacked by two men who made off with his pocket-book containing twelve £5 notes and two bills, one of £50 and the other of £46 7/-

He had in his pocket a purse containing 59 sovereigns which was overlooked.

He accused John Sutcliff, a Northowram butcher, with whom he had earlier been drinking at the Coach & Horses at Haley Hill, of being one of his assailants.

Sutcliff was brought before a magistrate but produced alibi evidence and was discharged.

In September 1838, Smithies applied for a liquor licence, but the application was rejected because his house was


not well adapted for a public house
 

Valentine was buried at Illingworth Church [26th July 1846].
