In 1626, he was required to pay composition and decimation.

On 18th March 1632, Henry Ramsden granted him a licence

to eat flesh during the time of his illness

which occurred during Lent.

He supported Charles I and died during the Siege of Pontefract Castle on 25th March 1644

[1622-1698] Of High Sunderland & Aykton.

Son of Abraham Sunderland.

In 1639, he went to Oxford University.

He fought on the Royalist side in the Civil War and took the command of Captain of a Troop of Horse under the Earl of Newcastle and his uncle, Sir Marmaduke Langdale.

He laid down his arms in December 1644.

In 1646, he had to pay £878 decimation. The fine meant that he had to sell the family estates at High Sunderland and Coley Hall.

He also owned land and property in Northowram, Hipperholme, Shelf and Wyke, and elsewhere in Yorkshire at Ackton, Featherstone, Oustropp, Estrington, Hive, Cave and Ricall.

About 1643 (or 1655), he married (1) Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Thornhill.

Circumstantial evidence suggests that Sam might have had an illegitimate daughter – Louisa [b 1881] – by Mary Brocksopp, a servant at Cromwell House in 1881.

She never married.

In 1841, she and her siblings Martha and Thomas, were living at Coley Hall.

In 1851, Sarah was a landed proprietor – with 15 acres and 2 labourers – living with sister Martha at Coley Hall.

In 1861, both Sarah and Martha were landed proprietors living at Coley Hall.

Martha died in 1861, and Sarah died in 1862.

They both were buried at Coley Church: Martha [8th August 1861]; Sarah [26th February 1862]

His will was proved at Manchester by his brothers John Sunderland, Abraham Garside Sunderland and Joseph Samuel Sunderland.
