Waterhouse, Catherine
[1814-1842] Daughter of John Waterhouse of Well Head.

She married Charles Edwards.

They both died of fever after a few days illness, Catherine on 17th September 1842 and Charles on 19th September 1842, whilst in Strathpeffer, Scotland. They are buried in the churchyard of Contin Parish Church. The church is on an island; the only other building on the island is the manse.

Waterhouse, Catherine Grace Doherty
[1842-1916] Daughter of Samuel Waterhouse.

Born in Halifax.

She lived in the family mansion at Well Head.

She was a great benefactor and supported several local churches. She was connected to Halifax Parish Church and Holy Trinity Church.

In 1915, she gave the Well Head Organ Snetzler organ to All Saints' Church, Elland.

On 11th July 1872, she married Captain Daniel Henry Doherty.

They had no children.

It is said that the marriage lasted a very short time, and may have been over by March 1875.

She continued to live at Well Head and her husband moved to Somerset.

After her father's death [1881], she continued to live with her mother Charlotte Lydia at Well Head, Halifax [1881, 1891].

After her mother's death [1901], she lived as a boarder with Edward & Elizabeth Collings, at 14 Philbeach Gardens, Kensington, London.

She lived at 6 Esplanade, Scarborough [1911], with 4 servants: ladies maid, parlour maid, house maid, kitchen maid

She died at Well Head [27th August 1916].

Probate records show that she left effects valued at £22,979 17/9d.

Probate was granted to Charles Thomas Musgrave esquire and Rev Leonard Philip Robin (clerk).

She was buried in the Waterhouse family vault – by the Rokeby Chapel – the last interment at Halifax Parish Church.

She was the last of the Waterhouse family

Waterhouse, David
[1564-16??] Of Ognel Hall, Birstall.

Son of John Waterhouse.

He was a barrister at the Inner Temple, London [1582, 1593] / MP for Aldborough [1589] / MP for Berwick-upon-Tweed [1601].

In 1598, upon the death of his brother Robert, he became the guardian of his nephew Edward. For a brief period, he was Lord of the Manor of Halifax, where he was holding courts leet in September 1598.

In 1607, he made proposals for a more rigorous exaction of first fruits and tithes.

During 1608, a trustee of Crowther's charity, he was accused of diverting to his own use part of the capital of the charity.

In 1614, he and his nephew Edward were both outlawed for debt.

In 1623, he appealed to the King for admission to the Charterhouse as a decayed gentleman, and was granted the next vacancy.

In 1624, the House of Lords committed him to the Fleet and fined him £500 for writing a scandalous petition.

In 1635, he gave evidence at a commission examining abuses in the Fleet prison, but this was ignored because he was

a man notoriously infamous and of no credit

In 1638, he brought a Chancery suit against Sir Arthur Ingram.

In 1537, he was the plaintiff in a matrimonial case in the Consistory Court against defendant Joan Bradley (alias Joan Waterhouse) [1516-15??].

Witnesses were James Furnes [Furnace] [1477-15??] of Southowram (webster), Edward Craven [1504-1???] of Southowram (wright), and Peter Grenerode [Greenroyd] [1495-15??] of Wakefield (wright).

On the death of his father, his uncle David Waterhouse became Edward's guardian. He bought property on Edward's behalf and borrowed money at high interest, which had to be repaid when Edward came of age. He also drew unsatisfactory conveyances so that Edward was threatened with litigation.

In 1614, he and his uncle David were outlawed for debt.

He inherited Shibden Hall.

He was knighted in 1603.

In April 1602, he married Abigail Barker from Ipswich.

Waterhouse, John
[1806-1879] FRS, FRAS, FGS.

Eldest son of John Waterhouse.

He lived at Well Head. At the house, he built an observatory and a garden where he grew exotic plants which he gathered on his travels. Louis John Crossley studied at his laboratory.

He was one of the subscribers to John Horner's book Buildings in the Town & Parish of Halifax [1835].

In 1834, he was President of the Halifax Mechanics' Institute.

In 1839, he travelled around the world, for health reasons.

He was a Fellow of the Royal Society, a member of the Royal Astronomical Society. Over a period of 8 years [1866-1873], he made detailed observations of the weather and of the night skies from Well Head, which he published in 1874.

He produced several inventions, including Waterhouse stops for cameras and photographic lenses and an alkaline gold toning bath. He was a friend of Rev Joseph Bancroft Reade.

He was one of those who advanced money for the construction of Halifax New Market.

Like his father, he was an artist. He was trained by his father. He became well-known in the Pre-Raphaelite movement. He was admitted to the Royal Academy [1885] and was made an academician [1895]. One of his most famous paintings was The Lady of Shalott [1888].

He owned a number of properties, including 2 fulling mills in Southowram, and the Moot Hall in Halifax, which he sold to his cousin Robert

In [Q1] 1916, he married Ethel Walton in Todmorden.

During World War I, he enlisted [August 1914] and served as a Private with the 2nd Battalion Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment).

He was killed on the first day of the Battle of the Somme [1st July 1916] (aged 26).

He is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial, France [6A & 6B], on a memorial in St Michael's Church, Mytholmroyd, and in the book Royd Regeneration.

Halifax, Skircoat, Northowram, Shelf, Hipperholme, Southowram, Ovenden, Brighouse, Clifton, Fixby, Toothill, Sowerby, Erringden, Langfield, Mankinholes, Soyland, Rishworth with Norland, Barkisland, Stainland, Elland, and Greetland,

and elsewhere in Yorkshire

Conisbrough, Warmsworth, Butterbusk, Firsby, Ravenfield, Woodlathes, Crookhill, Braithwell and Micklebring

He attempted to change the ways in which tithes were collected, and thus triggered off the Great Tithes Dispute.

Around 1584, he inherited Shibden Hall and the Manor of Halifax.

He made extensive improvements to the Hall.

In 1584, he was elected MP for Aldborough in North Yorkshire and moved to London.

His cousin Nicholas Waterhouse, sold him properties, including fulling mills in Southowram, and the Moot Hall in Halifax.

In 1580, he married Jane Waterton.

He was a member of Halifax Town Council [1851-1859], Mayor of Halifax [1851-1853], MP for Pontefract [1863], A magistrate for the West Riding and for the Borough of Halifax, Deputy Lieutenant of the West Riding, A director of the Great Northern Railway, Treasurer of the Royal Halifax Infirmary for over 20 years, and a Major in the 2nd West Yorkshire Yeoman Cavalry

On 21st March 1873, he was presented with

A vase of Italian design, about 40 inches in height, the body and cover elegantly chased, and having a shield on each side, surrounded by scrolls

Presented by Lieutenant-Colonel Sir Henry Edwards, Bart, and the officers of the 2nd West Regiment of Yorkshire Yeomanry Cavalry to Major Waterhouse MP, on his retirement after thirty years' service, commencing with the formation of the regiment, as a sincere token of the esteem and affection of his brother officers
 

On 25th August 1840, he married Charlotte Lydia Edwards.

He was injured – to the left arm and a number of bruises, his ear was badly torn and required stitching – in the Pye Nest Tram Disaster of 15th October 1907, but was treated at home.

His son, Tom (junior) was also injured – a cut face – and was treated at home, and was able to go to work on the following day

They were the bailiffs in the North for the Priory of Lewes, and collected tithes and administered the lands in the Parish of Halifax – see the Great Tithes dispute
