Sir Gilbert Stansfeld [14??-15??] was a younger son of Hugh Stansfeld.
He was clerk, chaplain [1514] and then Curate at Heptonstall [until 1558].
In July 1514, he is recorded as a brother – Dom – a chaplain at Heptonstall Church.
In 1520, he appears as a priest – Sir.
In 1526, he starts to be recorded at curate of the Heptonstall Church.
He is recorded as witness to many wills:
buying a new surples of lynnen cloth
In a number of wills, Gilbert was instructed to celebrate a trentall for the deceased's soul.
In 1529-1532, the daughters (and their husbands) of the late Robert Sutclyff the younger, yeoman, through his brother William, brought a case to the Chancery Court against Gilbert and John Nayler, clerks : money and goods, messuages, fulling-mill and land in Wadsworth, Midgley and Stansfield. The outcome is not recorded.
In 1537, Gilbert sued Elizabeth Draper, widow, in a plea of debt at the manor court, later in the year she sued him. The matters were reconciled.
In 1538, Gilbert sued Robert Sutclyff in a plea of debt of 20s in payment for certain lands etc. Robert said he owed nothing. The manor court found that the claim failed in law and Robert was excused.
Then, in 1539, Robert Sutcliff agreed with Gilbert in a plea of debt and was amerced 2d.

in feodes 4 pounds, paid 8d
