Gun Week started in Halifax and raised more than
£1,600,000. Guns brought to Halifax for the occasion were
positioned at Barum Top
- Friday, 8th November 1918:
Death of Sir George Armytage Bart of Kirklees Park,
Brighouse, aged 76
- Saturday, 9th November 1918:
Alderman R. Jackson elected Mayor of
Todmorden for the eighth time
- Monday, 11th November 1918:
News of the signing of Armistice with Germany
received with great rejoicing in Halifax and district. The whole area
went en fete and works and businesses closed to celebrate the event
- Monday, 2nd December 1918:
Gun Week started in Brighouse and raised
£43,000
- Sunday, 8th December 1918:
Colours of the 1/4th Dukes (Halifax Territorials)
taken from Halifax Parish Church to France
- Wednesday, 11th December 1918:
The 650 soldiers in the St Luke's War Hospital
entertained to a grand banquet and concert by the Borough Police to
celebrate Armistice
- Thursday, 12th December 1918:
Local men who had been prisoners of war began to
arrive home under the terms of the Armistice
- Saturday, 14th December 1918:
Great interest in the first post-war General
Election. The successful candidates were the Rt Hon J. H. Whitley
(Coalition) in Halifax, Alderman G. T. Ramsden (Coalition) for the
Elland Division and Major R. Barker (Soldier's candidate) in the
Sowerby Division
- Friday, 20th December 1918:
Wainhouse Tower taken over by Halifax Council after
a public appeal for funds
- Friday, 20th December 1918:
Campbell Gas Engine Company entertained 3,000
employees to mark the completion of the manufacture of munitions
between 1914 and 1918
