Solomon Marshall – son of George Marshall – was born in Southowram [10th April 1847].
He was a quarryman [1870, 1871]; a stone merchant [1901]; a quarry owner [1911]; a member of Brighouse Town Council [from 1912].
He established S. Marshall & Sons Limited, later Marshalls PLC.
He began working at the Slead Syke quarry of Camm Brothers, and progressed to become manager. He took over the business from the Camm family.
He subsequently had business at
His quarrying and mining business employed many of the Irish labourers who came to the district.
His grandson founded the Halifax Tool Company Limited.
On 10th September 1870, he married Sarah Mallinson at Halifax Parish Church.
Sarah, of Southowram, was born in Kilmarnock, Scotland, the daughter of a commercial clerk John Mallinson

Solomon died [aged 67] at Oban House [19th December 1914].
The family were buried at Brighouse Cemetery
Probate records show that he left effects valued at £15,500 9/2d. Probate was granted to his sons Ernest Marshall and John Mallinson Marshall
