A Quitclaim between Richard and his cousin Richard, son of Elias de Stansfeld, regarding lands held by their cousin John, son of Peter de Stansfeld:

Richard son of Elias de Stansfeld quitclaims and gives to Richard son of John de Stansfeld all rights which (he held) in all lands at one time (held by) John son of Peter de Stansfeld in the township of Stansfeld.

Richard and his uncle Elias were witnesses together in an undated [early 13th c] Quitclaim:

Thomas franciscus, son of John de Waddesworth, to Helias de Brodebothom, land in Wadsworth including parcel called Falgiderode,
Witnesses: Richard de Stansfeld, William the clerk de Langfield, Elias, son of Roger de Stansfeld, Adam de Waddesworth, Adam de Rediker and Michael? Talvas.

Richard was a witness to a number of other documents. While most of these are undated, a number of the other witnesses also occur in a deed that can be dated to c.1257:

Deed, undated : Jordan son of John Talvas, gave to Hugh de Copley son of Thomas Talvas his brother 16 acres in Skircoat woods, 5 acres in Merecloughbothom, and the fourth part of the mill.

A charter of William son of Richard de Hiperum, to Henry son of Henry de Coppeley, mentions the sum of 10 shillings to be paid before the feast of the Assumption BVM, 1260.

Quitclaim: Thomas son of William de Wurthestorne to Richard de Stansfeld my lord and his heirs for one mark of silver which he gave to me, one half bovate of land in Stansfeld that to wit which I before held of Richard.

Dating: The deed between Jordan son of John Talvas and Hugh de Copley son of Thomas Talvas his brother has been said to date 1220-30. In October 1234 a plea was entered by Isabel de Laigle against Jordan and Michael Talvas relating to land in Sowerbyshire. [Early Yorkshire Charters Vol.8 p. 22]. It has been stated (but so far unproven) that both Jordan and Thomas (father of Hugh de Copley) were dead before 1246.

Extract from the Hundred Rolls of 4 Edward I (1276) [i, 109 et seq] [An Investigation by Edward I into events in the latter part of the reign of Henry III (reign 1216-1272)]:
"..... They say also that Richard de Haydon, steward of Earl Warenne maliciously vexed Richard de Stanesfeld and charged him with having harboured a certain felon, and extorted 10 Marks from him"
