Halifax War Memorial

Halifax War Memorial: In 1916, William Wormald Longbottom supported suggestions that Halifax War Memorial be sited in Bull Green.

The memorial was unveiled at Belle Vue on 15th October 1922 by Sir George Fisher-Smith.

It is a cenotaph, 25 ft high, weighs 130 tons, and was designed by Manchester architect H. Scott Davies, having been chosen from 60 entries which were entered in a competition.

It was originally erected in memory of 2000 Halifax men who died in World War I.

In 1987, when Belle Vue was sold, a decision was made to move the cenotaph. Possible sites were outside the council offices on Northgate, and the Woolshops entrance to the Piece Hall.

In August 1988, it was moved to its present site in Duffy's Park, just north of Halifax Parish Church.

In November 1988, it was rededicated at a ceremony led by the Right Reverend David Hope, Bishop of Wakefield
