The poet Levi Haigh was born in Sowerby [22nd August 1861]. The son of George Haigh.
He attended Sowerby National School.
He was the Sowerby village postman, and a popular poet and composer.
He was a member of Steep Lane Baptist Church, and also a preacher and a teacher at Steep Lane Baptist Sunday School for 54 years. He was a deacon of the Church for 45 years, and well known as a local preacher.
Many of his poems celebrated local people and local sights, include one written about John Mitchell's School and Honouring an Organist.
In 1923, he wrote a collection of poems entitled Sowerby District: Reminiscences and Associations.
He published a book of hymns and tunes, and an Ambulance Choral March. He was treasurer of the Calder Valley Poets' Society.
In 1907, he married Elizabeth Greenwood.
They had no children.
The family lived at 3 Montague Street, Sowerby Bridge [1911].
Elizabeth died 13th February 1935.
Levi died 6 weeks later [25th March 1935].
The couple were buried at Steep Lane Baptist Chapel, Sowerby
