Waller Clatterbuck and America Caroline Hudson

Waller Clatterbuck was born in September 1845, the son of William Getter Clatterbuck and Caroline Leopard.

Waller Clatterbuck was the grandfather of my grandfather who was eleven years old when he went to live with them after his parents died. These are his recollections of Waller and Caroline.

"On my father's side of the family, my grandfather was Waller Clatterbuck and my grandmother's name was America Caroline Hudson. They lived on a farm near New Bloomfield, and later lived in a home in New Bloomfield. They had a cow, chickens and a garden on about 4 or 5 acres of land. The land was used for grass to graze the cow, and they would have to buy some hay or get some for the farm at hay harvest time. They had a smokehouse, and there the meat was cured. When I lived with them after my mother died, I had to milk the cow every morning and evening, and help take care of the garden in early spring.

When I was very small, we went there for Christmas and all of us who were there-our cousins, uncles and aunts- were very pleased that Grandpa gave us all a silver dollar. A silver dollar in that day to a kid of my age was a lot of money.

At Christmas time we didn't get much. we migh have had one small gift. The main thing that I looked forward to at Christmas was that we would each get an orange and sometimes a banana. That was the only orange we saw throughout the year, and many times it was the only banana we see for a year.

Grandpa Clatterbuck and two of his brothers built houses next door to each other.(James Henry and William Sam) The next house down the road a little ways, probably a couple of hundred yards, was Aunt Katie Clatterbuck's home (Note: wife of James Henry Clatterbuck) His brother had died and she lived there with another lady.

The town of New Bloomfield at that time consisted mostly of one street, running through the town. We lived on that street. Downtown there was one grocery store with the fountain and a little eating place that was operated by Judge Murray."

Waller Christian(named for his grandfather) and Dale Clatterbuck both remember their Grandpa Clatterbuck having a barrel of apples that he kept in the hall closet year round. When they would come and visit, Grandpa would get an apple and shine it for a special treat for the grandchildren.

Waller and America's farm at the time was one of the largest and most fertile in Callaway County, with the exception of the river bottom lands. They moved to New Bloomfield about 1908. After they moved to town, their daughter, Mary and her husband, Curtis Christian, worked their farm.

Waller was first married to Elizabeth "Fannie" Holt, daughter of James B. Holt and Lucy Reynolds. They were married September 17, 1868, She died August 29, 1870, after giving birth to a daughter, Lucy F., on August 11th, baby Lucy died on September 22nd. Waller and Fannie had one other child, an infant who was born and died on August 30, 1869. Fannie, Lucy and the un-named infant are all buried in Old Prospect Cemetery.

Waller married America Caroline Hudson, on March 20, 1873. She was daughter of Henry Moss Hudson and Harriett Elizabeth Crank. Together they had seven children. Sadly, they were preceeded in death by five of them. Four of them, Charles S., Boyd Leopard, Harriett E., and James Hamilton were striken with diabetes in the prime of life. Insulin was discovered just a decade later, which would have prevented this tragedy. Juvenile (type I) diabetes is found in the subsequent generations, including his great-great-great grandaughter and a great-great-great grandson. One other daughter, Guy Lutie Clatterbuck- Wilson, died in the great flu epidemic in 1918.

Two children, Shannon Douglas Clatterbuck and Mary Elizabeth Clatterbuck-Christian, lived well into old age. Waller died on August 1, 1928 and America died on May 16, 1929. Waller and America Clatterbuck were members of the Dry Fork Baptist Church where Waller was elected Deacon in 1902. He and America are buried in the church cemetery.
