Descendants of Charles Callen

First Generation

1. Charles Callen was born in , , Ireland. He died on 20 May 1825 in , , Tennessee.

By one account, "Came from Ireland with 2-4 brothers. They settled in Virginia and Tennessee. One of the brothers went away with an Indian and was never heard from again." There is a book "The Callen Chronicles," 1990 that reports four separate Callen families, Patrick, Samuel, William and Charles. The book was written by Edna M. (Callen) McNellis (Mrs. Thomas F.), 3654 Dean Dr., Barberton, OH 44203-4508. Ph (330) 644-4058. It was put on a CD by Scott Anderson, 609 Grace Street, Wilmington, NC 28401 ph (910) 762-4737

By this account, "Charles Callen is first heard of in a deed in York Co. Pennsylvania in 1783. Charles and his wife Alice Cowgill Callen received money from the will of her father Henry Cowgill and his wife Alice (Payne) Cowgill. Charles and Alice apparently went to VA because census records show their son Henry Callen was born in VA in 1786. Charles & Alice appear to have gone to Jefferson or Knox TN in 1794 according to 1850 census records."

Charles settled in Jefferson Co., Tennessee, east of Knoxville. In 1793, 1795, and 1804, there were three deeds for a "Charles Calahan" in the Dumplin Creek area of Jefferson Co., Tennessee, but we have been unable to prove whether it is the same Charles. In 1797 Charles Callen sold 300 acres on Tuckahoe Creek in Knox Co., Tennessee. Charles and Alice are probably both buried in Jefferson Co.

A Charles Callen and John Callen were on the 1806 tax list for Knox Co., probably brothers.

A Charles and Henry Callen appeared on the 1822 tax list for Jefferson Co., perhaps the two oldest sons. Another deed for 200 acres on Tuckahoe Creek by a Charles who was then living there was to Edwin and Archibald Callen, and may have been a deed from Charles Jr. (Tuckahoe Creek arises in Jefferson Co., and flows through north Sevier Co. into Knox Co., where it empties into the French-Broad River about 5 miles east of Knoxville.)

Later, around 1848, many of the Callens and Mulvaneys moved from Tennessee to Iowa. We note a John Callen made a purchase at one of the estate sales of the deceased Benjamin Davis Sr. of Jefferson Co., Tennessee in 1795 or 1796, and we suspect this John Callen was probably a brother of Charles.

It has been reported that Charles and Alice may have had an additional daughter Elizabeth, although it is unproven. e.g. An Elizabeth Callen married Morgan G. Maupine May 30, 1822 in Knox Co., Tennessee. However, we note that the 1870 census of Cumberland Co., Tennessee shows the household of a Morgan G. Maupin age 58 born Virginia, with wife Mary E. age 54 born Kentucky, and children.

Notes for possible future research: A John Callon Sr. appears on the 1820 Sumner Co., Tennessee census, 100021-00001. i.e. He was born before 1775. A Nancy Callon appears on the 1820 Hardin Co., Tennessee census, 020100-20110. John would be over age 45, and Nancy age 26-45. An A.V. Callen, born abt. 1825 in Tennessee appears with his household on the 1860 census for Carroll Co., Arkansas. We don't know whether any of these were related.

Further notes: Possible relatives??: In Mason Co., Kentucky: Wm. Calland/Callon on tax rolls first abt. 1795, and d. 1817. James Callon md. Anna Wells 1798 and moved to Clermont Co., Ohio in 1811 and on tax rolls 1803. John Callan md. Annie Timpson/Simpson 1797 but was off the Mason Co. tax rolls by 1806.

Further notes: Possible relatives??: CALLAN, CALLEN, CALLON, CALLENS,CALLAND family of Cabarrus Co., NC. James Callen (1770-Feb. 20, 1842) and his wife Olivia (--?--) moved to Dallas Co., Alabama before 1820. William Callen, Sr. may have been the father of James Callen. William Callen, Jr. (November 4, 1794-March 18, 1860), son of James and Olivia Callen, married Sallie Littleton (1801-1870). Sallie Littleton Callen is buried in the Valley Creek Cemetery near Selma, Alabama while the other Callen family members listed above (except William Callen, Sr.) are buried in Lebanon Cemetery, near Selma, Alabama.

The name Callan in Ireland is derived from the native Gaelic O'Cathalain sept that was located in counties Armagh and Monaghan. This name is taken from Gaelic words that translate as 'battle mighty' and is also sometimes anglicized as Cahalane and Culhane.

Charles married Alice Cowgill, daughter of Henry Cowgill and Alice Pain. Alice was born in , , Maryland. She died on 20 Dec 1825 in , , Tennessee.

A Short History of the Paynes - FHL 0013200 Item 9, shows an Alice Payne married a Charles Callen. However, it shows that Alice was born Dec. 22, 1720, and that early date makes it seem unlikely to have been the same Alice and Charles - a generation too early.

Filed in York Co., Pennsylvania: Chas. Callen to Joseph Manifold, March the 22nd, 1783
"Then and sundry other times received of Joseph Manifold the sum of Twenty seven pounds six shillings and eight pence it being money left to Eailce Callans by her father Henry Cowgill, respecting a peace of land will'd by Henry Cowgill to his daughter Elinor, she paying to his daughter Eailce the sum of twenty five pounds I say received by res signed Charles Callen, Alice Callen"

Charles and Alice had the following children:

2 M i Charles Callen was born on 23 Mar in , , Tennessee. He died on 8 Sep 1870 in , Lawrence Co., Missouri.

Served in the War of 1812, in Capt. Bowman's Co. of Tennessee Militia, from Sept. 23, 1813 to Dec. 22, 1813. Had two sons. He is the Charles Callen who appeared on the 1840 census of Bradley Co., Tennessee, just south of McMinn Co. where Mark and Polly Mulvaney had moved. He had gone there before 1837 when "Charles Callen of Bradley Co." sold 100 acres on Bays Mountain in Jefferson Co. to Preston Underwood. This deed was witnessed by Joseph and Isaac M Newman. Went to southern Missouri; resided in Newton Co., Missouri in 1851 and 1855. He and Margaret appear on the 1850 census of Jackson Twp., Newton Co., Missouri. His age is shown as 63 on that census which would imply a birth year of 1787, but that would be too close to the reported birth year of Henry.

His household appeared on the 1860 census of Newton Co., Missouri, occupation farmer, age 72 born Tennessee, and Sithey D. age 50 born North Carolina, no children with them.

A conflicting death date of Aug. 25, 1880 was reported, but we have used the date from the widow's pension application.

From the book Arkansas Pensioners:
"War of 1812 pension application W.O. #22799, W.C-#22158. B.L.W. #54408-40-50 and #65145-120-55. Service in Captain Bowman's Company of Tennessee Militia from 23 September 1813 to 22 December 1813. Married first to Margaret Ingram, second to Sethy Bryan 3 April 1856 in Washington County, Arkansas. Resided 1851 and 1855 Newton County, Missouri, soldier died 8 September 1870 in Lawrence County, Missouri. Widow removed to Moravia, Appanoose County, Iowa by 1878. (not abstracted)"
Charles married (1) Margaret Ingram. Margaret was born about 1781 in , , Virginia.
Charles also married (2) Sethy Bryan on 3 Apr 1856 in , Washington Co., Arkansas. Sethy was born about 1809 in , , North Carolina. She died after 1880.

After Charles death, Sethy filed an application for a pension based on his service in the War of 1812. She moved to Moravia, Appanoose Co., Iowa by 1878, where many of his relatives lived. On the 1880 census of Appanoose Co. she appears in the household of William and Rosettie Shutterly.

5 F iv Annis Callen was born on 22 Mar 1797 in , , Tennessee. She died on 30 Jun 1887 in , Appanoose Co., Iowa and was buried in , Appanoose Co., Iowa, New Hope Cem..

John W. Mulvaney and wife Mary (Callen), sister to Annis were in Jefferson Co., Iowa about 1843-1849, before moving to Appanoose Co., Iowa. There is a marriage record in Jefferson Co. for Annis Callen and Josias Baker on June 8, 1848. We suppose it is the same Annis Callen.

The 1850 census of Union Twp., Van Buren Co., Iowa has this household:
Josius Baker 59 VA Farmer
Annis 52 TN
Jane 20 KY
Sally 18 KY
Catharine 16 KY
Mary 14 KY
(Van Buren Co. is just south of Jefferson Co. A posting on rootsweb.com/Worldconnect shows Josias born Apr. 8, 1793 in Virginia, died Jan. 6, 1853 in Ottumwa, Wappelo Co., Iowa, which is just west of Jefferson Co. He had first married Mary Gillock Sept. 9, 1813 in Glasgow, Barren Co., Kentucky.)

The 1860 census of Walnut Twp., Appanoose Co., Iowa lists this household:
Sammie Wakefield 74 GA Farmer
Annise 62 TN

The 1870 census of Walnut Twp., Appanoose Co., Iowa (P.O. Centerville) shows:
Ev. Wakefield 38 IL Farmer
Mary A. 34 TN
Thomas W. 15 IA
Alice 13 IA
Sami 80 GA Farmer
Annie 72 TN Housekeeper

She may have gone to Kansas for a period of time. The 1880 census of Pleasant Twp., Butler Co., Kansas has this household:
Ev. Wakefield head 47 IL GA GA Farmer
Margaret R. wife 34 OH OH PA
Thomas F. son 25 IA IA IN
Etta daug 5 IA IA OH
Emmet son 3 KS IA OH
Ean daug 1 KS IA OH (Eva)
Annie stepmother 82 TN Ire MD Retired housekeeper

Butler County, KS 1883 List of Pensioners on the Roll
Cert# Name of Pensioner P.O. Address Cause for which pensioned
29,184 Wakefield, Annis Rose Hill widow 1812

So, apparently Annis never had children of her own. We deduce she was a spinster who had come to Jefferson Co. Iowa with her sister Mary (Callen) Mulvaney's family, had a late marriage (at age 52) there to Josias Baker as his second wife, and after he died, Annis remarried to Samie Wakefield as his second wife.
Annis married (1) Josias Baker on 8 Jun 1848 in , Jefferson Co., Iowa. Josias was born on 8 Apr 1793 in , , Virginia. He died on 6 Jan 1853 in Ottumwa, Wappelo Co., Iowa.
Annis also married (2) Sami Wakefield before 1860. Sami was born in 1790 in , , Georgia. He died before 1880.

Served in the War of 1812.
