4. WILLIAM M. MORRIS
Born c. 1834/36 Michigan
Married 1865/68
Died c. 1891 [probably in Oklahoma or Texas]
The LDS records show that William M. Morris was born in 1834 at Knightstown, Rush [sic, it is in Henry Co.] Co., Indiana. It is very likely that these were from a Bible or records from Jonathan Marvin Morris' family. However, since most census records indicate that William Morris was born in Michigan I am using that until proven wrong. I do believe that his parents were only in Michigan for a brief time and that the family was gone from there by 1840. There is a family picture taken about the time William died, possibly at the time of his funeral.

Children:

Albert L. Morris b. c. 1866/68 St. Louis, MO, m. 1894 to Bob ____. He was on the rush for the Cherokee Strip in 1893 and from Van Alstyne. Was enumerated in Greer Co., OK 1900. Unable to locate after 1900.
Children: William A. Morris b. Nov 1896 IT, Maude M. b. Sept 1899 TX

Sylvester M. Morris b. 1873 [Dennison?] TX, d. 1948. Buried Red Hill Cemetery, Roger Mills Co., OK. Married 1. Mallei M. Bentle [buried in Red Hill Cemetery] 2. Effie Williams [Effie is buried in Red Hill Cemetery]
Children by Mallei: Porter Roy b. Nov 1894 TX, May b. Oct 1897 TX, Earl Ray b. Mar 1900 OK, Homer Jewell b. c. 1902, Glen Bert.
Children by Effie: Delma Jane, Retta

Charles Marion Morris b. c. 1874 Texas, d. 1883 [per LDS records]

John Henry Morris b. 2 August 1876 possibly in Montague, Texas; d. 15 Dec 1922 in Fremont, Dodge County, Nebraska and is buried in Ridge Cemetery, Fremont, Nebraska.
By 1900 he was living in Custer County, Montana. He was on the Board of Directors for Powder River County, Montana. He died in Fremont, Nebraska. He had travelled to Nebraska for medical treatment but his condition could not be helped.
Children: Wayne C. b. 4 Oct 1907 MT, John D. b. 6 Dec 1910 MT, Margaret b. 1914

Marvin Jonathan Morris b. c. 1878 Sherman, Texas, d. 14 Oct 1949, San Antonio, TX buried Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery; Tombstone reads Jonathan Marvin Morris [Section J, Grave 125]. m. Alta Betty Phillips [sister to Sam H. Phillips].
Children: Anne b. 1899 NM, Archie Willis b. 3 June 1900 OK, Linnie Josephine b. 1903 OK

Jane Combs Morris [also called Eliza in one document] b. 26 Feb 1880 Dennison, Grayson Co., Texas, d. 11 July 1948. Buried at Red Hill Cemetery, Roger Mills Co., OK; m. Sam H. Phillips [also buried Red Hill Cemetery, OK].
One son, Bert [also buried Red Hill Cemetery]

Bert Willis Morris b. 26 Sept 1885 Indian Territory, d. 8 January 1956; m. Hazel Ruby Parks 9 April 1913 in Miles City, Montana

Family, so far, only located in 1880 Grayson County, Texas Census. There also may be other children and a son older than Albert is a possibility. Please also note the unusual occurance of an Albert and a Bert in the children's names. Willis is a family name on the Burgess side which can be traced back to 1815.

5. JOSEPHINE BURGESS
Born 29 November 1846 Lewis County, MO
Married c. 1865/68 [probably along the eastern part of Missouri, but not in Lewis Co.]
Died 8 February 1909 Roger Mills County?
Buried Red Hills Cemetery, Roger Mills County, OK

She, as a widow, is enumerated in Grayson County, TX in 1900. Living with her are her son, Bert; niece, Lena Copeland; boarder, Albert Bentle. This document becomes critically important. The identification of Lena Copeland as her niece, and the tentative identification of Lena Copeland's parents as Joseph Copeland [Coplen] and Margaret Morris, leads to the first possible relatives [brothers/sisters] of William M. Morris [identification by Norman Davis].

There is a picture of Josephine Burgess Morris and her youngest son, Bert Willis Morris

6. JEROME PARKS
Born c. 1850 Cass County, Michigan
Married 9 Sept 1891 Valley City, ND
Died 26 July 1945 Miles City, Montana

Family members say that Jerome was married prior to his marriage to Mabel Stella Jewell. However, records in North Dakota for that period are nearly non-existant.

GREAT GRANDPARENTS

[8. [JOHNATHAN] MORRIS
Born 16 February 1814, Bellefonte, Cenre County, PA [Douglas Morris]
Died 1889 and is buried at White Bead Cemetery, Garvin County, Oklahoma [Douglas Morris]
Please note that this is tentative. The document identifiying Lena Copeland as a niece has led to her parents, Joseph Copeland and Margaret Morris [identified by Norman Davis].

Children by first wife:
William b. c. 1834/36 [MI or IN], d. 1891, m. Josephine Burgess c. 1865/68

Children by Mary P. :

Margaret b. 5 Oct 1841 Missouri; m. Joseph Coplen 23 Dec 1859 in Grayson Co., Texas; d. 18 Nov 1900. Note: their daughter, Lena, is believed to be the "niece" living with Josephine Burgess at the time of the 1900 Census.
L. [female] b. c. 1845, TX
George W. b. c. 1847 TX m. Mary Couch. Lived in IT.
Lawrence Morris, b. 1845/47 IT [Chickasaw Nation per 1860 Census, Grayson Co.]. Sill alive in 1915 and living in Cleveland Co., OK. Married Hulda Jump prior to 1875.
Liza H. b. c. 1851 Chickasaw Nation
Rachel b. c. 1853 Chickasaw Nation
Alace b. c. 1858 Texas

Note: the identification of Johnathan Morris as the father of William M. Morris is tentative. It is, however, based on a 22 year search for him and going through literally thousands of records. It is very probable that William was by a first wife. The children afterwards are by another wife, Mary. I found Johnathan in Grayson County 1860 Census. However, William M. Morris is not in the county and his whereabouts from the time of his birth to 1880 are yet to be established.

The migration pattern for William is reconstructed as follows: William M. Morris' parents were born on the east coast. The father [if Johnathan] came from Pennsylvannia, mother from NY - information on Jonathan's birthplace as Bellefonte Co [sic, Centre County] comes from a handwritten document dating to the 1880's written by Mr. Loving. Jonathan may have been born in PA and raised elsewhere. Indiana is a distinct possibility. Sometime in the 1820's or early 1830's they may have lived in MI. There were a lot of immigrants into MI in the early 1830's from New York, Ohio and Indiana.

In any case, the sojourn in Michigan seems to have been brief. Family documents in possession of Margaret's descendants indicate that she was born in Missouri [not Texas as is given in the 1860 Census]. Johnathan or Jonathan seems to have taken out land patents from the government in Benton Co., Arkansas adjacent to Daniel Copeland. Jonathan came to Arkansas in 1841 per a history of him in Grayson County, Texas.

Then, the Morrises were in Chickasaw Nation; it was then very large and now comprises all or part of 10 counties in Oklahoma. And, there are very few records available in Indian lands. What were they doing there? Farming. At the time of his enumeration in 1860 in Grayson County, Johnathan was one of the wealthiest men in the county. And, because there was a stock herder enumerated on the property, there can be little question but that they were cattle farmers.

Johnathan's wife in the 1860 Census is listed as Mary, age 35 and from Texas. Lawrence has given his mother as being from Arkansas as has Margaret in some documents [however, Benton County, Arkansas, is adjacent to Texas.]

I still do not know how William M. Morris met Josephine Burgess or where they were living in 1870.

9. NN NN
Born in NY?
Died probably before 1842

10. JONATHAN BURGESS
Born 25 August 1820 New York
Married 25 June 1843 Lewis County, MO
Died 12 Jan 1892 Grayson County, Texas
Children:
Josephine b. 1845 Lewis County, MO, d. 8 Feb 1909 OK, married William M. Morris c. 1865/68
William Thomas b. c. 1848, m 1 Feb 1874 to Martha Emily George, d. after 1910 [enumerated in Abilene 1910 per WFT]
Joshua b. 4 Jan 1850 Lewis County, MO, d. 1 March 1912, buried Red Hill Cemetery, Roger Mills Co., OK; m. Frances L. George [b. 4 Feb 1856 in Tennessee, d. 24 Feb 1892 and is buried in the Van Alstyne Cemetery, Grayson Co., TX]
Joel Willis Burgess b. April 1852, m. Sally Jane Harris, d. after 1920 Census. Per WFT Joel was enumerated in 1920 in Swisher Co., TX
John H. b. c. 1855 d. 1934 Miles City, Montana, buried Miles City, Montana, m. Martha Ellen ___ [on 1900 Census Custer County, Montana]. John H. Burgess was called one of the most colorful of the old cowboys of Montana; he is written up in their textbooks.
James A. [G.?] b. c. 1858 [on 1860/70/80 census]
Fannie b. c. 1856? - not on 1860 Census, appears on 1870 census
Julius Edward [Edwin?] b. c. July 1861 [1870/80/1900 census]
Nancy M. b. c. 1860/67 - on the 1870 census as Nancy b 1860, on the 1880
Julia b. c. 1865 - on the 1870 census - this may be person listed as M. A. on the 1880 census.
Elizabeth b. June 1873 in Grayson Co., Texas on the 1880 and 1900 census.

Please note that Jane and Jonathan had 11 children, 10 of whom were still alive in 1900. Because differing names or initials and differing birthdates were used on the Censuses of 1860/70/80, it is difficult to know who is whom. Fanny may be the child that died. There is also a M. A. listed on the 1880 census and she may be the same as Julia. Julius Edward is called Edwin on one document and Edward on another, and there is some evidence that he was known within the family as Ed.

Census Information: 1850, 1860, 1870 - Lewis County, MO; 1880 Grayson County, Texas; 1900 - many children in Grayson County, some elsewhere as noted, others not located.

The Burgess family moved from Lewis County, MO to Grayson County, Texas possibly late 1871; the earliest document [deed] in Grayson County is dated 27 January 1872 when 160 acres was purchased on Case Creek from Thomas Moore.

11. JANE ROBERTS
Born 14 Sept 1824 Patrick County, VA
Died 21 Jan 1908 Grayson County, Texas
Buried Ethel Cemetery, Grayson County, Texas

The tombstone of Jonathan Burgess seems to date from his death. However, touching it is a larger monument which is quite wide. The base appears to be much older than the stone on top and is, in fact, of a different kind of stone. The tombstone on top is for Jane and Jonathan BURGERS. The dates for Jonathan's death are the same as for the stone adjacent. Only the last name is different. It seems that Jane [at least] changed her name. People I have corresponded with in Northern Texas speak of a Burgess family who changed their names to differentiate themselves from some other Burgesses. I suspect that it is this family.

In the 1900 Census Jane was enumerated as the head of the household. Jane had had 11 children, 10 of whom were still alive. She was born in VA, parents both born in NC. She could read but not write English, owned her home free. She was a landlord with 0 months unemployed. Edward her son and Betty her daughter were living with her.

12. ALANSON PARKS
Born 6 July 1812 [from tombstone]. He was probably born in 1813/14
Married 1837 Cass Co., MI
Died 12 June 1896 Page, Cass Co., ND
Buried Page, ND

Alanson lived in Cass Co., MI from 1834 [from his witnessing of land transactions] until sometime in the 1870's. He and Emeline are enumerated in the 1880 Census of Berrien Co, MI. By 1885, Alanson was separated or divorced and living in the Dakotas when the Territorial Census was taken.

15. JANE WALDRON
Born Oct/Nov 1835/36
Died 11 March 1904 Sheldon, North Dakota
Buried Union Cemetery, Oshawa, Ontario, Canada
Per 1900 Census, she had had 11 children and 6 were still living.

After she died, her remains were sent, via train, to Oshawa, Ontario for internment near her husband [source is the Sheldon Enterprise]. Union Cemetery gives her age as 68 years and 5 months. Please see complete text under Notes.

Some reports from relatives say that Jane remarried [in Canada] after Daniel's death, perhaps to a Mr. Martin. This I have not been able to confirm. The marriage did not last long and she moved with some of her children first to Minnesota then to North Dakota.

2ND GREAT GRANDPARENTS

20. JONATHAN BURGESS
Born 24 October 1770 Windsor, Berkshire, MA
Per the 1880 Census in Grayson County, Texas, Jonathan's father and mother were both born in New York; however, they had long been residents of NY. Jonathan and his wife, Mary Collins, came to Sempronius, Cayuga Co., NY from Stillwater, Saratoga Co., NY in 1796. Also moving were Jonathan's brother, Joel and their parents, Seth and Selinda Cady. There is little known about Jonathan and Mary's children, other than they had a large family. Below is a reconstruction from census records.

Children:
son b. c. 1784
daughter b. c. 1784
Sally b. c. 1796 Stillwater, NY, m. Elias Miller
son b. c. 1794 [1810/1820 census]
son b. c. 1802/1804 [1810/1820 census]
son b. c. 1804 [1810/1820 census]

By 1860, Joel and his family had moved to Kansas and were enumerated in Johnson Co. in 1860 and in Labette County in 1870. Joel is not found, so far, in 1880 but his son, Newton W. Burgess, is enumerated in Leavenworth County in 1880. Both Joel and his son, Newton, served in the Civil War.

Jonathan b 25 Aug 1820 NY; m. Jane Roberts 25 June 1843 Lewis Co., MO, d. 12 Jan 1892 Grayson Co., TX. Buried Ethel Cemetery. There are two tombstones for him - Burgess and Burgers.

21. MARY COLLINS
Born before 1775
Died after 1830 and before 1847 probably in Sempronius, NY.

22. JOSHUA ROBERTS
Born c. 1797 North Carolina [perhaps Tennessee]
Married 15 December 1820 Patrick Co, VA
Died after 1880 - Grayson County, TX most likely

Joshua first appears in the records of Patrick Co., VA with the marriage to Elizabeth Smith. They resided in Patrick County until at least April 1834 when they sold their land and by August 1834 they were in Lewis County, Missouri where they purchased land. Elizabeth died in the latter 1830's [no cemetery records available] and Joshua married Nancy Davis, probably a widow. He married a third and, perhaps 4th, time. It is very likely that he moved to Texas in the early 1870's.

Joshua was residing with his daughter, Jane, and her husband Jonathan Burgess at the time of the 1880 Census. I consider it very likely that Joshua is buried with his daughter, Jane, in the Ethel Cemetery. Please see the notes under #10 and #11.

Married
1. Elizabeth [Betsey] Smith - see listing #23

John W. Roberts b. c. 1842 Lewis Co., MO
Nancy M. Roberts b. c. 1844 Lewis Co., MO

No marriage records have been located in Lewis County for either of the above children.
[Note: Nancy Agnes Davis had a child, Zelinda, born in Upper Canada c. 1834; she married Jacob Head]

3. Elizabeth - last name, place and date of marriage unknown; appears on 1870 Census
Born c. 1828 in Kentucky
Died 30 August 1871, buried Liberty Cemetery, Union Township, Lewis Co., MO

4. Sophia Adams
Marriage in Lewis County, MO in 1874

Joshua and Betsey sold property in Patrick County, VA in December 1830 and on 1 April 1834. After the latter sale, they most likely moved directly to Lewis County, MO as on 24 August 1834, they purchased land there.

The 1830 Census - Patrick County shows 2 boys 5-10, 2 girls under 5, 1 girl 5-10.

Grant deed to James Roberts in Lewis County 25 February 1847.

23. ELIZABETH [BETSEY] SMITH
Born c. 1800 Patrick Co., VA
Died c. After March 1835 and before February 1838, Lewis County, VA
In August of 1820, prior to her marriage, Elizabeth was given the gift of a female slave, Jane, and 200 acres on Clark Creek by her father. She is specifically identified as his daughter in this document.

24. EBENEZER WALKER PARKS
Born 3 June 1788
Married c. 1810/1812
Died 18 August 1851 Blissfield, Michigan

Lived in Ohio from about 1812 to 1844 when he moved to Michigan. Enumerated 1820/1830 Oxford Township, Huron County, OH, 1840 Groton Township, Erie County, OH. 1850 Lenawee County, MI.
Carpenter by trade but also farmed.

Married:
1. Miss "Olds" [probably Roxanne Olds, the daughter of Timothy Olds a neighbor of Ebenezer Parks' in Ohio]. Information on Miss Olds is from Aaron's biography in county history.
Children by "Miss Olds"
Alanson b. c. 1813/14, m. 1837 to Emeline Hendricks [marriage in Cass Co., MI], d. 12 June 1896 Page, ND.
Orille
Mary
Mariah
daughter b. c. 1810/1820, d. prior to 1830
One of the daughters lived in Niles, MI, but I have not been able to identify her or her married name. Mary and Mariah were born c. 1814/15 - 1820 and were still alive c. 1882. Orille may be the Arila Parks who married John Gould on 7 March 1833 in Huron County, OH.
2. Mary [Gildreth] Bears - married August 3 1831
A widow when she married Ebenezer. She died in 1844. She and Ebenezer had 5 children. By the 1882, only Aaron and a sister still alive[Aaron's biography in county history]
Children
Aaron b. 17 June 1833, married Jane Cook. Lived in Valparaiso, Indiana.
daughter - on 1840 Census, not on 1850 Census
child
Margaret b. 10 August 1837. Was still alive when Aaron died in 1912.
John b. 20 Nov 1839, died prior to 1882 per Aaron's biography
3. Caroline
Children:
Wesley b. 1850 Lenawee, Michigan

The identification of Ebenezer as Alanson Parks' father was the result of combined work of Fred Hayes and myself. The letter to Roxy Tracy was critical in identifying Aaron Parks of Valparaiso as a relative, then the county history with Aaron's biography identified Ebenezer as his father. Further investigation led to Ebenezer's will which also identifies Alanson as a son.

*25. NN OLDS
Born
Died prior to August 1831
[Probably Roxanne [Roxcey] the daughter of Timothy Olds, a neighbor of Ebenezer Parks]
* The Olds family is included for two generations as I am virtually certain this is the mother's correct lineage. There is another possible Olds family from Rutland, VT where the Parks family had lived prior to 1806 and they are also known to connected to the main Olds Family line.

26. JOHN HENDRICKS
Born prior to 1797 England?
[based on him being at least 18 when Emeline was born]

Children:
Emeline, b. c. 1815 Virginia [now WV?], m. 1837 Alanson Parks [Cass Co., MI], d. 1899.

Family tradition says that he married in VA, then travelled through TN and then north [Indiana?, Ohio?] and that his first wife died and he married a relative of hers.
[His first name was found by a Robert Parks; I found the record where he is listed as from England]

27. NN NN

Bartlett owned property by the Blue Ridge Mountains. He was also a slave owner.
[much of the information is from personal research of land records and census records]. While there are some purported genealogies of Bartlett, there are difficulties with them - such as requiring that he reside in two place at the same time and be born prior to 1744. The name Bartlett is unique enough that I believe it may be sorted out. The problem is possibly due to a missing generation where there are men with the same name. Since the area where Bartlett Smith lived, and probably came from, has had courthouses burn there are difficulties as official land and deed records are gone.]

FAMILY NOTES

JOHN H. MORRIS DIES IN NEBRASKA

John H. Morris, chairman of the board of county commissioners, passed away at Fremont, Neb., Friday morning December 15, 1922 and internment occurred in a cemetery there the following Sunday.

Death was the result of kidney trouble and other complications. Mr. Morris, accompanied by his wife, went to Fremont, Neb. about two weeks before where he was hopeful that special hospital treatment would better his health, but it was of no avail, for his condition had become too far advanced. While he had not been feeling in the best of health for several months, he went to Miles City on the advice of Dr. James, for consultation by the doctors there. Even then his condition would not permit the extraction of several teeth that needed attention. After a thorough diagnosis, the Miles City doctors told Mr. Morris his case was hopeless and his days were numbered. They advised him to attend to any legal papers without delay. He returned to his home, drooped in spirit and daily became more restless as his vision became impaired and his physical condition weakened. Although he was given ebery possible attention to alleviate his condition, he had passed beyond the relief of medicines.

John H. Morris was about 47 years of age at the time of his death. He was born in Texas, and came to this part of Montana in the early 90's. As a cowboy he started to work for J. H. Burgess on the old S H ranch at the fork of Powder River, now known as the Ben Johnson place. He followed the life of a cowpuncher for a number of years and then started ranching for himself, settling first on Hay creek on the place now owned by William Lavell. He was working for George Pemberton and others at the T A ranch which was formerly known as the SH ranch when he met Miss Reta McArthur, a school teacher near Alzada, and later married her. Morris sold his Hay creek ranch and bought the ranch of Jack Watt on the Little Powder river, where he has made his home for the past 15 years. He is survived by his beloved wife, three children, Wayne, Jack, and Margaret Morris, and by a sister and two brothers. At the time of his death, Mr. Morris was chairman of the Powder Riber County Democratic Central committee.

Mr. Morris has been in public life since the creation of Powder River county in the spring of 1909. At that time he was appointed as one of the county commissioners by the legislature, and by the county board was elected its chairman. He was re-elected commissioner to the four year term at the general election two years ago and had two more yeras to serve at the time of his death.

Be it said of "Johnny" Morris that he was a conscientious public official and did what he believed was for the benefit of the majority. He was well acquaited with county affairs and contributed a large part of his time to the interests of the public. He was never too busy to listen to and adjust county difficulties for he had a faculty of appeasing and harmonizing public grievances.

While resident of the county had been prepared for the dath of Commissioner Morris they were hopeful that his condition was not so aggravated as reported and that he would regain his health. His many friends in this county express their sincere sympathy to his bereaved relatives in their great sorrow.

[There is a note on February 9, 1923, that Mrs. Rea Morris returned to her home from Fremont, NB, where she had been since the death of her husband in the early part of December.]

LAST RITES FOR COLORFUL CATTLEMAN
23 Feb 1934

Funeral services for the late John Miles City Saturday afternoon, and were conducted by the Rev. M. Van de Mark, and were attended by a host of friends who paid their last respect to one of the most colorful characters ever connected with the old range days in Montana.

Mr. Burgess was one of the old timers, and saw and participated in the rise and fall of the cow business when herds were rated by the thousand head. Mr. Burgess first came to Montana in 1886 when he drove 5,000 steers from Texas to a location north of the Yellowstone. Horace Broaddus, a brothers [sic] of the three Broaddus men now living here was with this drive but he returned to Texas. These steers were owned by the Newman Cattle company of El Paso, Texas, and whose headquarters in Montana was on Powder river at the mouth of Cache creek where E. Lee Wilson now has a ranch, and the brand was the N and the manager was Mr. Haston, an uncle of the Broaddus boys. In the spring of 1887 following the noted hard winter Mr. Burgess took 1700 head of steers the last of the 5000 to the Rosebud agency __ South Dakota for summer range.

Later Mr. Burgess went to work for the Northern Cattle company of which Joe Scott was manager, and it had headquarters at the mouth of Little Powder, a few miles below Broadus, and this land is now owned by Osborn Pemberton.

Their brand was the SH and Mr. Burgess remained with this outfit until it dispersed its cattle, and when it sold he and the late Henry Peays brought the remaining calves. Mr. Burgess took his calves to the head of Hay creek, now the Robison place, and established a ranch. Mr. Peays start in the cattle business was made at that time and he took his stock to the present Peays ranch on the Powder river.

Mr. Burgess was successful in his cattle business and sold out after he and his wife went to Rosebud, Montana, to live. The call of the Powder river country was too great to resist and after moving to Rosebud he spent most of his summers among his old friends in this section where he was an ever welcome guest at every ranch home.

Mr. Burgess was not a big man physically but he had high courage, an undaunted spirit that carried him through many a crisis in his career. Many of the old time cowboys remember him and will note his passing with regret. He always paid the best wages to his men but he was loyal to his employers whose interests always came first and as a cow man he stood at the head.

Among those who attended the funeral in Miles City from here were Mr. and Mrs. A. O. Pemberton, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Gilmore, Mr. and Mrs. P. S. Richardson, John and William Broaddus.

John Broaddus and Tom Gilmore were two of the pallbearers.

He leaves a widow to mourn his loss.

MRS. BURGESS' FUNERAL MONDAY
8 March 1935
Funeral services for the late Mrs. Martha Ellen Burgess, widow of the late Johnny Burgess, a pioneer of the Rosebud region was held Monday at the Graves chapel in Miles City at 2:30. The services were in charge of the Rev. M. V. Higbee, pastor of the Presbyterian church. Interment was in the family lot in Miles City.

Mrs. Burgess was born in West Virginia December 17, 1864. She was 71 years of age at the time of her death. She made her home in Rosebud during the past 26 years and was widely and favorably known. During the past year her daughter, Mrs. Hallie B. Jacobs, made her home with her mother.

In the early days of the great cattle business Mrs. Burgess was a resident of Powder River county or that section now known as Powder River county. Her husband, the late John Burgess was one of the most colorful figures of those times, and was one of the moving spirits of the great SH outfit, whose headquarters were at the mouth of Pilgrim creetk.
