In
Mahoning
Twp.,
1875
The
village of Jamestown existed mainly as a place for the workers from the Lehigh
Valley Railroad to live, close by to their place of work. Although the map does not show it, there
were extensive rail yards along the LVRR, from Lehighton and up into the
Packerton area. These yards were a
center of railroad innovation for many years, but were gradually phased out and
eventually closed in the 1960s. Not long after this map was made, a Victorian
style hotel was built along the main road near the Lehighton borough line. The landmark Jamestown Hotel stood for
nearly a century, a place where rail workers from out of the area could find
lodging while working at the LVRR yards.
The hotel burned to the ground around 1980.
