A Guide to the PROPERTY OWNERS

In the

Township

of

Mauch chunk,

CARBON COUNTY, pa.

In

1875

The Township of Mauch Chunk was originally part of East Penn and Lausanne Townships.  It was set up from these two townships on August 23, 1827.  By that time, the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Co. was making great inroads into developing the coal lands of the area, and the new township, named for the LC&N’s main point of operations, was mainly controlled by the company.  It encompassed the villages of Mauch Chunk, Nesquehoning & Summit Hill, as well as the Panther Creek Valley north of Summit Hill where the town of Lansford would later be.  Beginning in the 1830s, the LC&N began selling off lots within the township to private owners, leading the way to the incorporation of the villages into boroughs.  This began in 1850 with the incorporation of the town of Mauch Chunk, was followed by the towns of Summit Hill and Lansford in the late 1800s, and finally the borough of Nesquehoning in the 1960s.  Following the incorporation of Nesquehoning, the remains of old Mauch Chunk Township were divided between the above named boroughs and the township itself was dissolved, making it the only township in Carbon Co. that no longer is in existence.

Of the property owners shown below, many are repeated in the enlargement maps of the various villages that existed within the township at the time of this map.  This is especially true of the village of Hackelbernia at the western end of Mauch Chunk Borough.
