The village of Pennsville came into being in the very early years of the 19th century. Peter & William Jacob Andreas were the first land owners; in 1809 Peter sold his land to Jacob Dinkey who erected a dwelling and a tavern which housed the area’s post office. Church services were held during the early years in the school, and in 1851 the Lutheran & German Reformed congregations built a church on land donated by Jacob Dinkey. In later years the name of the village changed to Ashfield, which is how it is known today.
