Sailorsville (sometimes spelled Saylorsville) began as a lumbering camp deep in the woods of Kidder Twp. in the 1840s.  The name came to the village in the late 1850s when a lumbering company known as Saylor & Day began operations there.  Later, the company of Slater & Hudnit owned nearly all the buildings.  After the great forest fire of the late 1870s, lumbering operations came to an end and Sailorsville died out.  The site today is located within Hickory Run State Park.  As can be seen on the map at left, no individual owner names appear outside of the Slater & Hudnit operations.  The school was called Hays Creek School after a creek that ran by the area.
