Commodore Perry
The Commodore Perry was a specially built clipper ship from the shipyard of Donald McKay in East Boston, Mass. U.S.A. It was launched in 1854.
The ship was of 1964 tons and was apparently identical to the James Baines which is the vessel shown on the opening page to this site, and above.
The Perry was very fast and was bought off the stocks for the Black Ball Line of Liverpool, England by its owner, James Baines. The practice at the time was for the Line to bring immigrants to Australia and return to England with gold and wool - a very profitable run.
The February 1856 voyage which brought Thomas Carrick to Australia was completed in just over 72 days, an excellent time for those times.
After meritorious service for the Black Ball Line, the Commodore Perry was sold to Thompson & Harper of Newcastle-on-Tyne and was later crewed by many different sailors including "the rice-eating Laskars" of the Far East. On 28 August 1869 while carrying a load of coal to India it caught fire and was burned to the water line in Bombay.
A most inglorious end to a magnificent vessel.
