"We swear by the Southern Cross to stand truly by each other, and fight to defend our rights and liberties" - oath administered to the diggers by Peter Lalor, 30 November 1854.

The early history of Ballarat is often about gold and gold diggings. A list of most of the diggings and their commencement dates can be viewed  here.
