A Virtual Tour

Guard lock #3 Section 3 toward Walnutport

Looking north at the Lehigh Water Gap (Blue Mountain),from guardlock 3. The highway bridge in the background is Rt 873. This bridge is used by hikers on the Appalachian Trail which follows Blue Mountain. To the left (southwest), is Georgia and to the right (northeast), is Maine.

Dam 3, which created the slack water pool necessary to provide water to Section 3 of the Lehigh Canal, was located a short distance below the Lehigh Water Gap.

Towpath wall of guard lock #3. Guardlock #3 is the upper end of Section 3. Two small cribs in the river above the dam guided boats into the guard lock.

Looking through guardlock #3, in the downstream direction. Note that the berm side wall has caved-in. This lock utilized miter gates at both ends. Lock lift was only .8 feet.

Guard lock #3 from the towpath wall looking across. Note the berm wall collapse.

Guard lock #3 from the lower end. The berm side wall continued some distance beyond the lower gates to hold back the hill above. In this photograph, the berm side wall ends just before the willow tree. The lower gate would have been some distance north of that point.

This is a close view of the wood cribbing that remains on the berm side wall of guard lock #3.

Upper end of lock #22 looking through the lock. Lift for lock #22 was 7.9 feet.

Lock #22 from the towpath wall looking across the lock.

This painting by Howard Briesch shows the "Maiden of the Mist" (circa 1900), as it plied the canal. The Maiden of the Mist operated as a floating beer wagon, serving the canalers and those that lived along the canal as well.
