Carstairs in Lakes Entrance Cemetery

Lakes Entrance Cemetery

Victoria, Australia

This page covers the Carstairs buried in Lakes Entrance Cemetery in the Gippsland region of Victoria, Australia. We visited beautiful Lakes Entrance March 27th - April 1st 2000 while we were travelling around the world. On March 30th, I made a trip up the hill to the town cemetery, and transcribed the Carstairs headstones I found there, as well as taking some pictures. All the people mentioned here are descended from William Carstairs, son of John Carstairs and Agnes Ferguson from Kilrenny in Fife, and Mary Ann Nelson. William was responsible for starting up the fishing industry in Lakes Entrance; his family had been fishermen in Scotland for several generations in Kilrenny and Cellardyke. His descendants are very numerous in the town and surrounding area. They even have a street in town, Carstairs Avenue, named after them.

The tombstone of Victor Keith Carstairs. inscription reads:

Victor K Carstairs died 29th May 1958 aged 61 years

There is a small masonic symbol at the top of the tombstone. Victor was the son of John Carstairs and Alice Evans born in 1897 at Cunninghame, Victoria, Australia. Cunninghame is now part of Lakes Entrance.

The grave of Joshua Evans Carstairs. The inscription reads:

49207 Corporal

J E Carstairs

Royal Australian Air Force

5th August 1958 Age 51

"Jim" so dearly and sadly missed.

By his wife Letty and son Evan

The symbol above the inscription visible in the photograph is that of the Australian Air Force. Joshua Evans Carstairs was the son of John Carstairs and Alice Evans. He was named after Alice's father, and was born about 1907 and died near Lakes Entrance. His brother William Cleave Carstairs was one of 29 men from Lakes Entrance to die in the first world war.

This is the grave of Letitia Jessie, wife of Joshua Evans Carstairs. I don't know her surname or anything about her, except the information from the tombstone as follows:

In loving memory of our wonderful mum and grandma Letitia Jessie (Letty) Carstairs

Passed away 15 Jul 1986 aged 72

Sadly missed but loved forever

She is buried next to her husband.

The grave of Florence Audrey, wife of George Eric Carstairs. As with Letitia Jessie, I know nothing beyond the inscription, which reads as follows:

In loving memory of Florence Audrey Carstairs born 31.1.1914 died 23/5/1996 aged 82 years

Dear mother of Delma and David, loving nan of David, Robert and Ian
