Natcher Ross and Family
Back to HomeNatcher Ross was born (according to A. A. Graham*) “near Harrisburg, Penn., Feb. 4, 1790.” Natcher, along with his brothers and sisters, was originally from Pennsylvania, although we have not yet found any official record of his birth. On Oct. 5, 1815, he married Sophia Arnold (b. 1796 in Luzerne township, Fayette County, Ohio, the daughter of Benjamin and Mary Arnold). They moved to a farm in Monroe township, Richland County, Ohio in 1821. (Richland County, Ohio Original Land Purchasers including School Lands from the original work of Ellsworth H. Morse, Jr., Revised 1999 shows that the Natcher Ross land was purchased in 1814 by entryman James Arnold. There were 164.5 acres, for which $402.94 was paid.) Sophia Ross died on September 20, 1848. By the time of the 1860 Census, Natcher Ross had moved into the town of Lucas, Ohio. His son-in-law Jacob Leiter took over his Monroe township farm. Natcher died in Lucas, Richland County, Ohio on 03 March 1864. Natcher and Sophia Ross, along with son John Ross, are buried at Mt. Zion Cemetery, Monroe township, Richland County, Ohio.
Natcher and Sophia Ross’s children:
William Ross b. ca. 1820. D.d. at Frazer River (the site of the 1853 Gold Rush in British Columbia, Canada—William may have gone West to California prior to that time) married Catherine Shull on June 28, 1848. She died June 9, 1880, buried at Mt. Zion Cemetery, Monroe Township, Richland County, Ohio. Children: Mary E. Ross b. ca. 1848, William Ross b. ca. 1851
Rezin Arnold Ross—sometimes called Reason, settled in Indiana; m. Susan Barr 08 Dec 1842, Richland County, Ohio; d. 26 Apr 1869, Kosciusko County, Indiana.
Mary Ann Ross—b. Aug 1824, Monroe township, Richland County, Ohio; d. 1911, Lucas, Richland County, Ohio; never married, but had use of the family home as well as one year’s maintenance of it. (according to her father’s will)
Susan Ross—b. 27 January 1827, Monroe township, Richland County, Ohio; m. 02 Jul 1848 Richland County, Ohio to Jacob Leiter and lived with him on the Ross family farm in Monroe township, Richland County, Ohio: d. 05 Feb 1904, Lucas, Richland County, Ohio.
Rachel Ross—b. 10 May 1829 Richland County, Ohio; m. Enoch Hegg France 09 Oct 1851 in Richland County, Ohio. d. 17 December 1920
John Ross—b. 18 Oct 1832; d. 23 Feb 1849, Monroe township, Richland County, Ohio.
James Rossb. ca 1835; m. Amanda J. Hughes 26 September 1861 in Richland Co., Ohio; served as U.S. mail agent in Lucas, Ohio.
Nancy Jane Ross b. ca 1841; m. Richard Baxter Burger 13 May 1862 in Richland Co., Ohio; d. 11 April 1914 in Richland Co., Ohio
According to Richland County Ohio Abstracts of Wills 1813-1873 by Anne Lockwood Dallas Budd, 1974, Natcher Ross had 3 grandsons who were named Natcher: Natcher Leiter, Natcher France, and Natcher Ross (son of Reason). He mentioned all three of them specifically in his will and bequeathed each one of them $100.

Unresolved Question: Who was the Charlotte Ross, daughter of Natcher and Sophia Ross, that was mentioned in Charlotte Ross's will? (See Home page) The will was written in 1838, but we have no knowledge of a child of this family by that name.
