The Ancient History of the Distinguished Surname

"Hollett"

As submitted by Robert Hollett from Newfoundland, Canada

The most ancient surname of Hollett makes an impressive claim to being one of the oldest Anglo/Saxon surnames on record. The history of the name is closely woven into the intricate tapestry of the ancient chronicles of England.

Professional researchers have carefully scrutinized such ancient manuscripts as the Domes day Book  (1086), the Ragman Rolls (1291-1296)- the Curia Regis Rolls, the Pipe Rolls, the hearth Rolls, parish registers, baptismal, tax records and other ancient documents and found the first record of the name Hollett in Lancashire, where they had been seated from early times, in Hollett, hamlet in the parish of Gars tang, some say before the Norman Conquest in 1066 A.D.

Many different spellings were encountered in the research of your surname. Although your name, Hollett occurred in many different manuscripts and documents, from time to time the surname was also officially spelt Hollet, Holliffe, Holiffe, and these variations in spelling frequently occurred, even between father and son. Scribes and church officials, often traveling great distances, even from other countries, frequently spelt the names they were recording as they heard it. As a result the same person could find different spellings of the name recorded on birth, baptismal, marriage and death certificates as well as the other numerous records such as tax and census records.

The Saxon race gave birth to many English surnames not the least of which was the surname Hollett.

The ancient Britons in the 5th century invited the Saxons into England.  They were a race of fair skinned people living along the Rhine valley as far northeast as Denmark. General/Commanders Hengist and Horsa led them.

The Saxons settled in the country of Kent, on the south east coast of England, Gradually, they probed north and westward, and during the next four hundred years forced the Ancient Britons back into Wales and Cornwall in the west, Cumberland to the north, the Angles, on the other hand, occupied the eastern coast, the south folk in Suffolk, north folk in Northfolk. Under Saxon rule England prospered under a series of High Kings, the last of which was Harold. In 1066, the Norman invasion from France and their victory at the Battle of Hastings. Subsequently, many of the vanquished Saxon landowners forfeited their land to Duke William and his invading Norman nobles. Generally, the Saxons who remained in the south were not treated well under Norman rule, and many moved northward to the midlands, Lancashire and Yorkshire and away from the Norman oppression.

This notable English family name, Hollett, emerged as an influential name in the country of Lancashire. By the 13th century this distinguished family had branched south to Gloucester shire. Some noted historians have per posed the connection between this name and Hallett, although there is no evidence to support the claim. It would appear that it is uniquely of Lancastrian origin. In Gloucester shire the name was frequently spelt Holiff. They flourished on their estates for many centuries, intermarrying with other distinguished families of the area. Notable amongst the family at this time was Hollett of Lancashshire.

During the middle ages the surname Hollett flourished and played an important role in local affairs and in the political development of England. During the 15th, 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries England was ravaged by plagues and religious conflict. Puritanism, the newly found political fevour of Cormwellianism, and the remnants of the Roman Church rejected all non-belivers, each promoting their own cause. The conflicts between Church groups, the Crown and political groups all claimed their followers, and their impositions, tithes, and demands on rich and poor alike broke the spirit of men and many turned away from religion. Many families were freely encouraged' to migrate to Ireland, or to the colonies'.  Some were rewarded with grants of lands, others were banished.

Some families were forced to migrate to Ireland where they became known as the Adventurer for land in Ireland'.  Protestant settlers undertook' to keep their faith, being granted lands previously owned by the Catholic Irish. They were known as the Undertakers'. There is no record of this distinguished family migrating to Ireland, but this does not preclude the possibility of individual migration.

The New World offered better opportunities and some migrated voluntarily, some were banished mostly for religious reasons. Some left Ireland disillusioned, but many left directly from England, their home territories. Some also moved to the European continent.

Members of the family name Hollett sailed aboard the huge armada of three massed sailing ships known as the White Sails, which plied the stormy Atlantic. These overcrowded ships such as the Hector, the Dove and the Rambler, were pestilence ridden, sometimes 30% to 40% of the passenger list never reaching their destination, their numbers reduced by dysentery, cholera, small pox and typhoid.

In North America, included amongst the first migrants which could be considered a kinsman of the surname Hollett,  or a variable spelling of that family name was Mary Hollett who settled in Rappahannock, Virginia in 1741.  In Newfoundland, there was a Company called Thomas Hillett & Co. in Burin in 1805; Samuel Hollett settled in    Adam's Cove in 1806; Mary in Harbor Grace in 1819; James in Bird Island Cove (now Elliston) in 1825; John, a planter of Western Bay in 1827; Thomas in St. John's in 1828; Ed Hollett was married in St. John's in 1831; the family also settled in Bay de Verde; Selsom-Come-By; Arnold's Cove; Flat Island, Labrador, La Manche and many more.

From the port of entry many settlers made their way west, joining the wagon trains to the prairies or to the west coast. During the war of Independence, many loyalists made there way north to Canada about 1790, and became known as the United Empire Loyalists.

Contemporary notables of this surname, Hollett, included many distinguished contributors. The family continued to make important cultural and political contributions to the societies on both sides of the Atlantic.

During the course of our research we also determined the many Coat of Arms granted to different branches of the family name.  The most ancient grant of a Coat of Arms found was; Blue with a gold chevron between three silver crescents.

Notes for William Hollett:

Ticoralak Island

(pop. 1961, 7). Ticoralak Bight is a broad cove located on the north side of Groswater Bay,

Labrador, east of the entrance to Double Mer and approximately 18 km northeast of Rigolet qv.  Several families have lived at Ticoralak Island, while Ticoralak Head (the southern headland of the Bight) continued to be used as a salmon fishing station in 1993.

The earliest settlers to be noted at Ticoralak are two brothers from Adams Cove, Conception Bay:  William and Thomas Hollett. The Holletts decided to settle at Ticoralak Island in about 1878, after having been involved in the summer fishery in Groswater Bay for some years. By 1885 they had been joined by the Oliver family. (In 1888 the Hollett brothers moved to St. John's, after the death of their wives, although they returned to the island each fishing season for some years thereafter).

Ticoralak first appears in the Census in 1901, with a population of 12. In 1904 the Rev. Arminius Young noted ``quite a large number'' at Ticoralak: five families, two of which had settled in the previous year. In addition to Olivers, these included the families of Jerry Flowers (whose establishment was described in 1918 as ``one of the best houses on that part of the coast'') and Abe Broomfield. In 1921 Ticoralak was recorded as having a population of 19, rising to 31 by 1945.  These people made their living from the salmon and cod fisheries supplemented by winter trapping.  Most had at least one other residence in the area: either a winter place for trapping (such as Rocky Cove qv) or a summer fishing station (including Ticoralak Head, Big Island and Mullins Cove).

From the late 1940s the people of Ticoralak Island increasingly wintered at Rigolet, and soon came to be regarded as resident there, although as late as 1965 there were two families, the Tooktoshinas and Shuglos, living more or less year-round at Ticoralak with a winter place at Rocky Cove.

Arthur died at the age of 58.

" Aunt Jessie" as her friends knew her as a small women, small only in stature, she was big in kindness and love. She married Arthur Hollett when she was only sixteen years old. She had spent most of those sixteen years in what she called "in service". Her family was poor fisher people and she was expected to help with the work. Her three brothers died at an early age from what she said were from "catching a cold".  At an early age she went to help keep house with her uncle who sometimes treated her mean, she would have to scrub old wooden floors and sometimes the floor would have ice on them in the back porch. She also helped an uncle who was a doctor when he would be called to treat the sick. She said more then once she held a baby in her arms while the Doctor would cut a tied tongue loose, or treated an infected ear.

After marriage she spent many lonely nights waiting for her husband to get back from the fishery, perhaps not hearing from him for months and not knowing if he was safe and knowing that he was always in danger.  After she had raised her two children  (Marjorie and William) and her husband had passed away in 1941 she helped with her son's five children. Then in 1948 William's wife (Catherine) passed away, aunt Jessie or "Nan as she was known to her five grand children agreed to look after and raise the children and she did this up until her passing on May 2nd.  1959. Age 68 years and 11 months.  Nan was a wonderful Christian woman.
