Cato's Fort
This comes from "Mississippi Territory in the War of 1812" by Rowland. On page 39 in the footnotes Mr. Rowland quotes a description of the forts in the area used to defend against Indians. He describes the Old St. Stephens Fort as one that could again be used & on the west side of the Tombigbee, on a high bluff, at the head of sloop navigation. Then you come to Fort STODDARD 4 mi. east of Mt. Vernon, then at Mobile was Fort CHARLOTT & Fort BOWYER, then the ill fated Fort MIMS. 2 mi. so. east of Fort MIMS was Fort PIERCE, built by 2 brothers from New Englander, John (a teacher) & William (a weaver) PIERCE. In Clarke Co. was Fort GLASS built by Zachariah GLASS & his Creek Indian neighbor, Nah-hee. Fort MADISON was in the northeast corner of Sect. 1, Township 6, Range 3 E of the St. Stephen's meridian which was then the eastern boundary of Clark Co. & only 225 yards north of Fort GLASS. The 1st store, gristmill & cotten gin was set up around this area in 1812 & 1813. Fort SINQUEFIELD was about 10 mi. north of Ft. MADISON, on the western side of Bassett's Creek, in Sect. 13, T 8, R 3 E about 5 mi. southeast from the "present" town of Grove Hill, formerly called Macon, the county seat of Clark Co. Fort WHITE was a short distance northeast of Grove Hill. LANDRUM's Fort was 11 mi. west from Fort SINQUEFIELD (Sect. 18, T 8, R 2 E) & MOTT's Fort was in the same area. On the Tombigbee & northward from there, Fort EASLEY (Sect10 or 11, T 11, R 1 W) at what is now WOOD's Bluff, named as were nearly all others, from a prominent settler in the neighborhood (the bluff took it's name from Maj. WOOD of the Burnt Corn expedition & was 50 mi north of Fort MIMS). TURNER's Fort was 8 mi. south & 5 mi. west of Fort EASLEY on the west bend of the Tombigbee, near the residence of Abner TURNER. 2-3 mi. from there was the Choctaw Reservation known as Turkey Town (Fakit Chipunta in Choctaw). In this stockade were members of the TURNER, THORNTON, PACE & other families. Here for a while resided Tandy WALKER, who is mentioned in GAINES records, who was 'a most experienced & daring backwoodsman', but in the summer of 1813 he was connected to affairs at Fort MADISON. Passing down the river on the west side, 5 mi. below Coffeeville, about a mile from the river, was CATO's Fort. Still further west, in Washington Co., was RANKIN's Fort, the most western of the River Group. McGREW's Fort was in the corner of Sect. 1, T 7, R 1 W, about 3 mi. north of Fort St. STEPHENS, in Clark Co., 5 mi. north & 18 west from Ft. MADISON. Here 2 brothers, William McGREW & John McGREW, British Royalists then, refugees, probably from the Atlantic Coast, made an early settlement near the Tombigbee River. They supposedly were exemplementary mean, having become good Americans. 6 mi. south from Jackson, at Gullett's Bluff, was Fort CARNEY, built by Josiah CARNEY, who settled on the river in 1809. 3 mi. south of Ft. CARNEY, near Oven BLUFF, was POWELL's Fort, where about 6 families, including those of John McCASKEY, James POWELL & John POWELL. LAVIER's Fort, built, according to a black man Dick EMBREE, near the residence of Capt. Lawson LAVIER who traded with the Choctaw Indians. Also, in what is now Wayne Co., MS were ROGER's & PATTON's Forts. PATTON's Fort was at Winchester & ROGER's Fort was 6 mi. above.

Church (around the Cole Creek area) & the only thing I found at all was written in a time-line after the actual minutes & it doesn't even give a 1st name! (Graciously supplied by Cynthia) The Buie Book written in the 1950's and added to by Scott Buie in the 80s has a lot of information on Union Church, Mississippi. Heres a snippet: Shortly after the 1790's many Scotch in North Carolina began to heed stories of a land of plenty to the south. There, along the higher eastern banks of the great Mississippi river lay a land that could be had for the taking. A land where transportation was not a problem that it was in North Carolina, where a ton of freight sometimes cost fifty dollars to move from Brunswick to the Scotch villages of Cumberland County; for these goods could be brought up the great river by sea going boats, and bought at from merchants at a reasonable price, and crops could be marketed to these same merchants at a big price. The first Scots from Robeson County who explored these new lands along the Mississippi were George TORREY, son Dougald TORREY, Laughglin CURRIE, and Robert WILLIS in 1806. Most likely they took the wagon trail from Greensboro, NC to Jonesboro in Tennessee and then west to Nashville. There the trail turns south to Columbia then west toward Savannah, Tn. Cross the Tennessee River to Purdy, now called Selmer. At Selmer a wagon road leads south to Corinth, Mississippi. From Corinth you travel south and pick up the Natchez Trace and follow that southwest to Union Church. This probably took them 3 months to travel one way. A second group arrived with the last names GALBREATHS, GILCRESTS, CAMERONS, and MONTGOMERY. These Scots were nearly all Presbyterians and they established a church in 1811. Union Church was organized in 1817 by Reverend Joseph BULLEN before the state was admitted into the union. These settlers were mainly from Robeson county, North Carolina. After several years Reverend Joseph BULLEN gathered the Presbyterian families that had collected from different parts of the country and organized them into a church, which has ever since been known as "Union Church" Union Church was then given to a large section of the country in the eastern end of Jefferson county, Mississippi. It extends about 20 miles from west to east, running over into the present county of Lincoln for several miles. Its average width is perhaps ten miles from north to south. It embraces the two Presbyterian churches of Ebenezer and Union and at a later date two Methodist churches, Nebo and Galatia. The ruling elders of Union Church were Angus PATTERSON, Neil BUIE Jr., John BUIE, Matthew SMYLIE, Charles McDONALD, Murdock McDUFFIE, John WATSON, John BUIE, Archibald BAKER, Reuban LEE, Malcolm McPHERSON, Lewis CATO, Daniel G. BUIE, Daniel H. CAMERON, William B. ALSWORTH, Samuel D. McCALLU, Allen CATO, N.R.C. WATSON, Davind GALBREATH, John SMYLIE, George TORREY, and Peter WILKENSON. The register on names (Not all inclusive) included McARN, McARTHUR, McBRIDE, McCALL, McCALLUM, McCURE, McCLUTHIE, McCORMICH, McCORVEY, McDONALD, McDOUGALD, McDUFFIE, McEACHERN, McFATER, McINTYRE, McLAURIN, McLEAN, McMILLEN, McMURCHIE, McNAIR, McPHERSON, McQUEEN, McREA, and others. The period between 1820 and 1830 may be called the romance period of the Scotch settlement. The people were young, times were good, and money was to be made. After the civil war Yankee carpetbaggers moved in and bought up the land. The proud Scotch families moved away over time and the area eventually lost its Scotch identity.

To the person who applies himself to any one occupation which he has chosen as his calling in life there can be only one result-that of success, and a high place in the esteem of those with whom he has come into contact. Edwin CATO is no exception to this rule, for by strict attention to his calling and the exercise of his mental faculties, which are far above the average, he has acquired a good competecy. The CATO family was among the early and most prominent families to settle in the eastern part of Jefferson County, Burrel CATO taking up his abode there about the year 1820, moving thither from Wayne County, where he had resided for a few years while enroute to this section from North Carolina. He opened up a large farm her, here reared his family and here also made his home until his death. Of three sons born to him, Sterling C., the father of the immediate subject of this biography, was the youngest. He was born in Wayne County August 12, 1816, but attained man's estate in Jefferson County, whither he came with his father. He was married here to Mrs. Rebecca McLaurin, a daughter of Norman GILLIS. Mrs. CATO was born in Mississippi, and after her marriage with Mr. CATO they located on the old homestead which had belonged to the CATO family, and here Mr. CATO successfully followed the occupation of planting. He was a man of exemplary habits, gave his time and attention to his business and farming interests for many years, and at the time of his death, which occurred December 6, 1878, he was a member of the Presbyterian church. His widow survives him and resides on the home place, aged seventy-five years, having borne a family of two sons and four daughters that grew to years of maturity: Cora (deceased) was the wife fo W. B. SCOTT; Georgia is the wife of J. B. MULLINS of Franklin County; Gertrude is the widow of Lewis CATO; Laconia is the wife of N. B. GILLIS; W. L. CATO is a planter of Franklin county; and Edwin, who has spent his life in this country. In his youth he was given the advantages of the Union Church high school, after which he went on the farm with his father, with whom he remained until after the latter's death. He married February 19, 1879, to Mrs. Martha E. CATO, daughter of Maxwell NEWMAN, of Franklin county, in which county Mrs. CATO was born, reared and educated. After their marriage they settled on the old CATO homestead, but at the end of a few years he opened a general mercantile establishment at Union Church, purchasing a half interest in an established business at this point in January, 1885, since which time he has conducted it very successfully. He also owns an interest in a general mercantile house at McNair, and also in a like establishment at Russum, Claiborne county. He carries an excellent and complete stock of goods, and by strictly fair dealing with all, as well as by his courteous and pleasant manners, he has built up a good patronage. The old home farm is still in his possession, and in addition to his duties as a merchant, he successfully manages the farm. He is a shrewd financier, and socially as well as in a business way he is a very pleasant gentleman to meet. He and his wife have no children of their own, but are rearing three orphans, two boys and one girl, the children of Mrs. Cato's sister, who is deceased. Mr. CATO and his wife are Presbyterians, and are hospitable, charitable and upright citizens, and by their many worthy charactoristics have many warm friends.

Burrell CATO - Applying for pension, liviing in Jefferson Co., Miss. Age 77 as of date of aplication - 27 Sep 1841 - States that he was drafted and entered the service as a Pvt. in S. C. Militia on or about 1 Jun 1781, Capt. of company in which he was first drafted was James CLARK and Maj. GAMBLE was the Regt. commander. Could not remember the number of the regt. but said it was under Gen. Francis MARION. Unit was used principally for scout parties for 1 month when Burrell and other members of the company were allowed to return home but be prepared for service at a moments notice. Called into service again on or about 25 Jul 1781. Attached to Capt. THORNTON's Co. (Co. of foot) also under command of Gen. MARION. Served "upwards of one month until the battle of Outlaw (?) Springs." This company did not reach the field in time to participate in the battle. They assisted in guarding prisoners from the battle until about 15 Sep 1781. Then he was permitted to return home again under the same terms as before.
On or about 15 Dec 1781 (being a minor at the time) he moved with his father from his father's residence on the waters of Black River about 20 miles from Camden to waters of Lynch's Creek (a distance of about 40 miles) On or about 1 Feb 1782 he was drafted into Capt. John WATTS' Co. and marched to Murray's Ferry on the Sauter River. They remained there about 1 month. Allowed to return home again. On or about 15 Oct 1782 he was called into service again and marched with a Co. under an ensign (couldn't rermeber his name) to a place called "Four Hole Bridge". he served there for 1 month when he was discharged. He stated that during this enter time he did not engage in any civil pursuit. He had no documentation and knows no person who can testifyt to his service. His name was not on the pension rolls of the agency of any state. He was born on the waters of Drowning Creek in N. C. in 1764 ( he had no record of his age). After the war he lived on the waters of Lynch's Creek until 1816. Then he moved near a place called Fort St. Stephen on the Tombigber River. He lived there 1 year. Then he moved to Wayne Co., Miss. and lived ther about 7 years. Then he moved to his then present residence near McLeans store in eastern part of Jefferson Co., Miss. He could not remember receiving a written discharge. In a 7 Jun 1832 declaration he stated: Ensigns name he served under was Wm. N(V ?)AILL. Maj. GAMBLE was under Col. LEE. At thje time of entering the service he was living in what was now (1832) Sumpter Dist., S. C. On 27 Sep 1841, G. H. WILSON forwarded Burrell Cato's pension application to Washington, D. C. with a cover letter requesting approval. In the letter Wilson writes "Mr. CATO is a man of excellant character, but ignorant and imbecile and has but a few years to live."

We have evidence re Caroline Cato's second marriage to William Lorenzo Addison Griffing, Jr. who died during the civil war in an accident while serving the Confederacy in MS. They had one child, John William Williams (no error) Griffin(g). Her grandparents apparently were Burrel and his wife Frances because Frances gave Caroline a "Deed of Gift", a slave named Hannah (See Jefferson Co. MS deed record book H, pp 590-591, dated 29 Dec 1853. In this deed Frances refers to Caroline as her granddaughter. Another curious thing we have noted in our research on Caroline is that Thomas Millsaps is often associated with her records, for example, in the succession papers for Griffin(g), Millsaps signs his name under hers (Union Parish LA deed records dated March 15, 1866).

WEST dec'd. examined & approved & ordered that the sum of $129 be allowed the said Admr. for court charges & commissions on final settlement.
In Jefferson Co. Quarter Pleas records, CATO West is the Justice of the Court & hence is listed on almost all the records there around 1802. William IVEY is also listed in the same records in 1811-13 as having a dispute with a land trader from Tenn.

We command you that the goods & chattels, lands & tenements of Thomas CATER late of your county, you cause to be made the sum of $148.83 which HARRIS & JORDAN lately in our Circuit Court, has recovered against him for their damages which they have sustained, by reason of the non-performance of a certain promise & assumption by the said Thomas CATER to the said HARRIS & JORDAN lately made, (with interest in the rate of 8%...from April 1828 until paid) Also the sum of $15.76? for their costs... Thomas CATER is convicted, appears to us, of record; and that you have the said sum of money before the judges of the state aforesaid, at a Circuit Ct., to be holden in & for the Co. of Jefferson, at the courthouse thereof, on the 2nd Mon. in April next, to answer to said HARRIS & JORDAN of their damages & costs aforesaid...Joshua CHILD, presiding Judge.
