DEATH: Anthony Weigel, 83, 1409 Ninth Avenue N.W., Mandan, died Oct. 28, 1999, at his home in Mandan. Services will be held at noon Monday, at Christ the King Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. today, and 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Sunday, both at Weigel Funeral Home. A Knights of Columbus Rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. tonight, and a parish vigil will be said at 8 p.m. Sunday, both at Weigel Funeral Home. Visitation will continue until service time on Monday at Weigel Funeral Home only.
Anthony Weigel was born on March 14, 1916, to Michael and Margaret (Wangler) Weigel. He was raised and educated in the Logan County area. He was united in marriage with Rosalia Wald on Oct. 17, 1939, at St. Anthony's Parish south of Napoleon. They farmed southwest of Napoleon, Emmons County until 1978 when they retired and moved to Mandan.
Anthony was a member of Eagles Club, Knights of Columbus third and fourth degree, serving as a Grand Knight. He delivered Meals on Wheels for many years. He was an active member of Christ the King Parish, serving as Eucharistic Minister and on the maintenance committee. He was also an active member of St. Boniface Parish while on the farm and was trustee there for many years.
Anthony's greatest love of his life was his family and since 1972 he always made sure the family celebrated an annual picnic. He was a man of few words and in his gentle way showed us a person of humility. He worked hard in his chosen life's work on his farm. He loved the land and all it produced. Even after his retirement, he would actively participate in the operation of the family farm. He approached life with an open mind, saying, "There is always a better way to do things." He loved music, dancing and playing cards. He spent many hours wood working which had its beginnings when he built his first house on the farm.
Grateful to have shared his life are his wife of 60 years, Rosalia, Mandan; five daughters and their spouses, Mary Ann and Alois Vetter, West Fargo, Clara Helvig, Mandan, Don Helvig, Bismarck, Viola and Louie Eckroth, Lodi, Calif., Aggie and Clifford Horner, Bismarck, Betty and Kenneth Huber, Kintyre; two sons, Tony Jr. and Pauline, Menoken, and Mike and Connie Menne Weigel, Vandais Heights, Minn.; 30 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Bernhard and Aloysius; and three sisters, Barbara Gross, and Catherine and Magdalena Fettig, all of Napoleon.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Anna Piatz; and one brother, Baltzer. (Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan)
