Leverington Road Cemetery, Wisbech
Wisbech General Cemetery is a 3 acre tranquil oasis located off the Leverington Road, Wisbech.
Established in 1836 the design followed the mid-19th century style of building public cemeteries laid out along
the lines of a formal garden. To allow use by all denominations the ground was not consecrated.
By the 1960s only six burials took place in ten years and in 1972 it finally closed. 6571 people are buried in the cemetery.
This is the cemetery where my gt grandparents, Charles and Ellen Scales are buried. I was lucky enough to be shown around
the cemetery in 2002 by Kevin Rodgers of the FFHS as he knew where my gt grandparents grave was located amongst all the undergrowth.
But it still took some finding. Below are photos I took on that visit. I would have taken more but the battery died on my camera.
This is how we found Charles & Ellen's headstone:

The inscription reads:
In Loving memory of CHARLES SCALES
who died 11 January 1928 aged 75 years
and of ELLEN his wife
who died 16 September 1946 aged 93 years.
Resting where no shadows fall.

In 2014 Fenland District Council agreed terms for a 30 year lease to the Wisbech Society, including the care of the
chapel and memorials to become effective when funding for the project has been obtained. An application was submitted
to the Heritage Lottery Fund for the renovation of the chapel and the initial costs for its use as a public study/learning
amenity.
