Funeral of Alonzo Stephen PALMER - 8 March 1910

    On Tuesday afternoon a very large number of people assembled in Wisbech borough cemetery, where the funerals of 
    the victims of last week's motor-car accident took place.

    The internment of the late Mr Alonzo PALMER was first conducted by the Rev. TRIFFIT, Vicar of St. Augustine's,
    Wisbech, and the deceased's house being quite close to the cemetery the coffin was carried to the cemetery by members
    of the Borough Fire Brigade, to which the deceased belonged.  In additionm to the family mourners, a large number of
    deceased's friends followed the coffin, and at the close of the service the mourners were just leaving the cemetery 
    when the second cortege arrived.  This had started from the late Mr. T. GARNER's house, the Engineer's Tavern, 
    Victoria Road, around which there was a great number of people, and it had travelled from one side of town to the 
    other, passing through the centre of the town, where there were many signs of sorrow and sympathy; the blonds being 
    drawn down at nearly all the shops and houses.  before the procession started a large and representative body of members 
    of the various organisations with which deceased was connected had assembled; and they headed it. These included representatives
    of the Strict Benevolent Lodge of the Loyal Order of Ancient Shepherds; the Clarkson and Victoria Lodge of the Royal
    Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes, the Wisbech and District Licensed Victuallers' association, and the Victoria Qu... 
    Club and the Wisbech Working Men's Conservative Club, the latter including the Mayor, [Mr. W. MILLER], who is the 
    Chairman of the club.  At the cemetery, the service was conducted by the rev. R. H..man, pastor of the Primitive Methodist
    chapel, and Mr. SNELLING readthe Shepherd's funeral orations.  

    In both cases some very beautiful wreaths were sent, one from the Corporation employees being among those in the case of 
    Mr. PALMER, and en... of the organisations mentioned sent wreath to the funeral of Mr. GARNER.

    The late Mr. GARNER leaves a widow and three children, but it transpires that he is well insured.

    The late Mr. PALMER, however, was not insured, and was not even in a benefit club, and his wife and family of five little
    children are left totally unprovided for, and what makes the c... even worse is that an increase in the family is 
    expected shortly.  It is believed that public subscription will be opened for the benefit, and the proprietors of the 
    M... shows, roundabouts, etc, have already set good example by arranging to give all the money taken at their establishments
    between 3 and 5 o'clock this [Friday] afternoon for the benefit of the wife and family.
