George & Bridget RUSSELL - from Ireland to Euximoor Drove

George & Bridget RUSSELL

George RUSSELL was born about 1780, either in Upwell, Cambridgeshire or Ireland, and Bridget about 1790 in Ireland.

George's occupation was that of Shepherd. He would have probably married Bridget in Ireland, as their 1st child,
William, was born there in 1816.

But where they came from in Ireland, no-one knows. But the RUSSELL name is quite common there.

It has always been assumed that George was born in Ireland, but there is a new school of thought regarding this.
That George was in fact English and from Upwell and was part of a local militia that was sent to Ireland where he
met and married Bridget. But no evidence has yet been found to support this.

George and Bridget had 5 sons:

William born 1816 Ireland died 1875 Upwell
John born 17 Aug 1819 Upwell, Cambs. died 1846 Euximoor
George born 19 Nov 1820 Upwell, Cambs. died 1902 Euximoor
Thomas born 2 Jan 1823 Upwell, Cambs. died 4 Jun 1902 Rubicon, Dodge County, Wisconsin, U.S.A.
James born 12 Dec 1825 Upwell, Cambs. died 1889 Upwell
N.B. in most cases, for "Upwell", read "Euximoor" as both Christchurch and Euximoor Drove came under Upwell for Parish Register entries and later, Civil Registration. George died 9 September 1860 and Bridget died 6 June 1861. I assume that they are buried together at the Baptist Chapel, Upwell - but as the Baptist Minute Books are still missing, and all the headstones have been smashed and cleared away due to the redevelopment of the Chapel to a dwelling, we may never find out. BUT I do have a photograph of what could have been their grave Believe it or not, the majority of the Russells in Upwell and Euximoor are descended from this couple and their 5 sons!
