1 September 1916

From the “Wisbech Standard” 1 September 1916:

Christchurch - “Funeral of Mr Jesse SCOTT”

The funeral of the late Mr Jesse SCOTT took place at the Church here on Friday afternoon amidst every manifestation
of respect and esteem in which the deceased was held by the very large and representative gathering assembled at
    the Church.

The service was conducted by the Rector of Christchurch [the Rev. Grey Neville] who met the hearse at the Church gates.

The wreaths from the family constituted the only floral emblems, which, in accordance with the wish of the deceased,
were not to be sent. A pitch pine coffin, heavily furnished with brass fittings, bore a handsome plate on which was
    engraved:

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr. Albert RUSSELL, Christchurch, assisted by Mr. H. HUTCHINSON.

The Church was filled, and as the procession wended it’s way to the graveside it looked a most sombre yet imposing scene.

The late Mr. SCOTT was widely known, and his connections in local matters brought him in touch with many who held him
in strong regard. He had a kind and sympathetic nature wherever the claim of the poor were concerened and in him many
    have a lost a friend.

In the United Free Methodist connection he was a firm supporter, and much has been due to his efforts here in that
direction. Deceased was characteristically independent, seldom influenced by the opinions of others and although
a fearless opponent, those who knew him well and worked with him admired the sterling virtues of his character and
singleness of pupose in his work for others.

He served for a long period on the Board of Guardians. He was a Trustee of the Upwell Consolidated Charities, a
Commissioner of the Level of Upwell, Outwell, Denver and Welney, and for years held a seat on the Board of School
    Managers.

His life was passed in the village where he died, and as a farmer, Mr. SCOTT, by hard work and good management, made
a successful agriculturist, owning about 450 acres of land in the parish where his life was spent, and chiefly through
    his own industry.

He married a daughter of the late Mr. Reuben DANZEY, of this place and his wife survives him with 3 sons and one
daughter to mourn the loss of an affectionate husband and a devoted father.

Mr. SCOTT retired from business about three years ago through ill-health.
