BISHOPSTON is an extensive suburb of Bristol, which was formed in 1862 into the Eccleslastical district of St. Michael and All Angels, in the parishes of Stapleton and Horfield, in Clifton union, containing, by the census of 1871, 1931 inhabitants; in the deanery and archdeaconry of Bristol, diocese of Gloucester and Bristol, hundred of Barton Regis, West Gloucestershire; 2 miles north from Bristol, 33 south-west from Gloucester, and 122 from London. The vicarage, in the incumbency of the Rev. George Wright Bence, M.A., is valued at £820 per annum, with residence, and is in the patronage of the Bishop of the diocese. The church is a modern plain Gothic edifice, dedicated to St. Michael and All Angels, consisting of nave, chancel, and south aisle, with bell turret surmounted by a small spire. There are four windows of stained glass, one in the east end and three in the west end. The Methodist Free Church have a place of worship here. There are National Schools for children of both sexes, which were erected in 1872 on land given by Bishop Monk's Horfield Trustees, who are lords of the manor. There is also a British School, in which the Horfield Local Board hold their meetings.
