COLEFORD -
With Newland, and the Village of Clearwell, and Neighbourhoods
COLEFORD is a small market town and chapelry in the parish of Newland, and hundred of Saint Briavels: 122 miles w.n.w. from London, 20 w.s.w. from Gloucester, and 8 w. from Newnham - the last-named town situated on the line of the North Wales railway. Coleford itself is pleasantly situated at the western border of the county, near Monmouthshire. The coal and irone mines in this neighbourhood are considerable; the ore of the latter is particularly rich, yielding upon the average, about ninety percent of metal. The town, which is gas-lighted, consists principally of one tolerably spacious street, in which is the market place: the environs are exceedingly pleasant, and some of the views are very picturesque. The land is undulating, and diversified by woods and orchards, and there is a considerable quantity of cider made from the produce of the latter. Coleford is a polling station at the election of members to represent West Gloucestershire. The places of worship are a handsome chapel of ease (of which the Rev. J. L. Sisson is the minister), and one each for Baptists and Independents, the latter erected in 1842. A school, conducted upon the national plan, was opened here in 1835, and still continues to dispense its benefit to children of either sex. The market is held on Friday; and a wool fair on the 20th of June, and the following day. The population of Coleford chapelry, in 1841, was somewhat above 2,600.The village of NEWLAND is situated about 2 miles w. from Coleford, and 4 s.e. from Monmouth. The beautiful river Wye bounds the parish, and there are several rapid rivulets. The houses composing the village are erected in the form of irregular quadrangle, of which the parish church of All Saints is the centre: it is a spacious structure, with a tower at the west end, ornamented with pinnacles and open worked battlements; and the interior has some very ancient and interesting monuments. The living of the parish is a vicarage, in the gift of the bishop of Llandaff; the Rev. George Ridout is the present incumbant. On the west side of the churchyard is the grammar school, founded in 1632 by Edward Bell, with a house and endowment for as master; there is also an almshouse, founded by the same gentleman: opposite are other almshouses for sixteen indigent persons, founded by William Jones, Esq., and there is a charity school, now conducted upon the national plan. The parish of Newland contained, in 1831, 4,046 inhabitants, and, in 1841, 4,085 - including the population of Newland tything about 700. Clearwell chapelry 674, and that of Coleford as above stated.
CLEARWELL, a chapelry in Newland parish, is about 2 miles s. from Coleford and 7 w. by s. from Blakeney. The chapel, some years since, was enlarged by means of a grant of £400 from the church building society. The population is given with Newland.
