Morris & Co. Commercial Directory & Gazetteer of

Little Sodbury 1876

LITTLE SODBURY is a village and parish in Chipping Sodbury union, containing, by the census of 1861, 148, and in 1871, 150 inhabitants, and 959 acres; in the northern division of Hawkesbury deanery, archdeaconry of Bristol, diocese of Gloucester and Bristol, hundred of Grumbalds Ash, West Gloucestershire; 2 miles north-east from Chipping Sodbury, 4 north-east from Yate Station, 14 north from Bath, and 15 north-east from Bristol. The rectory, in the incumbency of the Rev. Edward Hasluck, M.A., is valued at £200 per annum, with residence and 30 acres of glebe land, and is in the patronage of Winchcomb Henry Howard Hartley, Esq., J.P., who is also lord of the manor. The original church, dedicated to St. Adeline, was situated near the manor house, but having fallen into decay, it was replaced by the present one in 1859 on a more eligible site. It is in the Perpendicular style, and consists of nave, north aisle, porch and tower, and was in fact, a restoration of the old one as nearly as possible. There is a Parochial School for children of both sexes. William Tyndall, the first translator of the Scriptures into English from the original languages, is supposed to have been born at North Nibley, about 1485, and first conceived the idea in the dining hall of Little Sodbury manor house in 1522, he being then chaplain to the lord of the manor, Sir John Walsh. He completed the New Testament, and printed it at Worms, and introduced it into England 1526, for which he suffered martydom at Vilvorde, 6th October, 1536, aged about 51 years. Wycliffe had previously translated the Scriptures from the Latin, but Tyndall was the first to translate them from the Hebrew and Greek. The rateable value of this parish is £1612.
