STINCHCOMBE is a parish and village in Dursley union, containing, by the census of 1861, 340, and in 1871, 334 inhabitants, and 1462 acres; in the deanery of Dursley, archdeaconry of Gloucester, diocese of Gloucester and Bristol, hundred of Berkeley, West Gloucestershire; 1 mile south-east from Berkeley Road Railway Station, 2 west from Dursley, and 4 north-west from Wotton-under-Edge. The vicarage, in the incumbency of the Venerable Sir George Prevost, M.A., Archdeacon and Hon. Canon of Gloucester is valued at £180 per annum, and is in the patronage of the Bishop of Gloucester. The church, dedicated to St. Cyr, is in the Decorated style; and consists of nave, chancel, and aisle, with porch, and tower surmounted by a spire, it was rebuilt in 1855, with the exception of the porch, tower, and spire. It contains 6 stained glass windows. There is a National School for children of both sexes, which has recently been considerable enlarged, and a new room added. There is a Lending Library, consisting of about 300 volumes, for the use of the parishoners, at the nominal charge of a penny per month. The Venerable Sir George Prevost, Bart., is lord of the manor. The rateable value of this parish is £2752.STINCHCOMBE HILL, which is noted for magnificient views of the surrounding country rises immediately above this village.
