of Fressingfield and St. James, South Elmham, Suffolk, England, bornabout 1521, made his will 10 April 1590. It was proven at Metfield,Suffolk, 28 July 1602. He was a wheelwright. It is possible he was theRobert Fyske taxed at Laxfield, Suffolk, in the subsidy of 34-35 HenryVIII (1542-1544), and again on 17 April 1545, when 13/- tax wasexacted on goods worth 13 pounds. He was in Fressingfield in 1554 whenhis son Richard was baptized, and was of St. James probably by the endof 1546, when it was said he had fled from religious prosecution underQueen Mary. His will listed his children and a stepson, NicholasBarbor of Chepenell Greene. (Boyer) Jordan lists his father as Simon,Simon, William, Symond. Needs checking.
7 - ROBERT FFYSKE - Born about 1521, a wheelwright of Fressingfield, and St James', South Elmham. Married Mrs Sibilla Barbor (nee Gold), awidow. Sibilla was in
great danger in the time of the religious persecution 1553-58, aswas her sister Isabella Phillips, who was confined in Norwich Castlefor her religion and escaped death
only by the power of her brothers Paul and Peter Gold, who were menof some influence in the country. (It would appear that the residentsof the area around Laxfield were
particularly vociferous in their support for the Protestantreformation; in an account by Robert's great-grandson Rev. Johnffiske, his grandparents and great-grandparents are
described as "eminently zealous in the true religion".) Robert fledfor religion's sake in the days of Queen Mary, but was once moreresiding at St James in 1567-8 and later at the
time of his death. His first wife having died, he married secondlyto Joan ?, who was herself buried at St. James, South Elmham on 3August, 1587. His will is dated April 10,
1590, it was proved in July 1602.
