[1594] "He took part as a soldier in the great struggle for freedom, andafter the close of the Revolutionary war came across the Alleghenymountains. He and his two daughters and their husbands settled inBlacklick township which was then part of Westmoreland county, in1808. Amos Lawrence erected a log cabin and started to make a home inwhat was then a wilderness. By hard work he managed to clear a tracton which he farmed the rest of his life, dying there whenseventy-three years old...His wife Desire died April 2m 1826, agedsixty-six years."

[1590] Stewart says he was probably a native of Preston, New London Co., Ct.,but other evidence points to RI.

[1593] In the pension records for Amos, Daniel Lawrence attested to the factthat he knew Amos from birth and that Daniel was an officer in theRhode Island regiment for the Revolutionary War. The affidavit wassigned in Indiana County, PA on 26 May 1829 and sworn before StewartDavis.

Amos lists his service as being first on Sloop of War Argo (agreeswith DAR records) under Capt. Talbot in 1778. In 1779 he served in theland service in RI under Capt. Sayles (?) in the regiment commanded byCol Angle and later by Col. Benjamin Olney.
