[1622]
The surname BENNETT is derived from the latin word benedictus, meaning"blessed". It is found on early records inn variant spellings ofBenet,Benett, Bennitt, Bennitte, Bennit, Benit,. Bennet, BENNETT, andothers, of which the last is that commonly used in America today.
According to some authorities, about the year 896 A.D. the BENNETT'Swere a band of freebooters in Saxony, whence, it seems, they removedto France and settled on the RIVER LOIRE, where they lived severalcenturies, it is thought that representatives of the family went fromFrance into England at the time of the Norman conquest..
Nathan and Huldah seem to have come to Blacklick Twp. fromMassachusetts in 1824. They probably were in NY before that. Onesource says his parents were Nathan Bennett and Elizabeth Lewis/Lewes(of MA). Research has failed to prove or locate them.
[1630]
A Nathan Bennett appears on the tax roles of Warrensburg, NY, 1814,1816. This is the only evidence found that this Nathan might havelived in or near Warrensburg other than the fact that his wife wasborn in nearby Kingsbury and that his first 7 children were born inNY. Other Bennetts listed in the tax rolls were Abel, Caleb (1814),Cobb (1816), James, and, Samuel. No connection to Nathan has beenproved.
Another fact that leads to Warrensburg is that Nathan's oldest sonmarried Marie Davis, dau. of Silas and Eunice (Geer) Davis who werealso from that area. Both families later settled in Blacklick Twp.

[10540] The Morse Genealogy has her parents as (Probably) Jonathan and Sarah(Smith), but this seems to be an error. They are known to have 6children. None are named Mary; the birth dates of the first three(Sept.1732, Oct. 1733, and Nov. 1735) would seem to rule her out as achild in this family.
