He moved from Taunton to Exeter, Devon, Eng., where he establishedhimself as a mercer, and married. He came to New England and settledin Dorchester, MA, by 1636 with his wife and two youngest sons.
His wife was a member of the Dorchester church in 1638, and theiryoungest son, James, was baptized there in 1637 or 1638.
There are several land records in Dorchester referring to ThomasTrowbridge in the years 1637-1639. He was an early settler in NewHaven by 1641, a wealthy man engaging in the foreign shipping trade.
He soon returned to and remained in England . He left his three sonsin the stewardship of his servant Henry Gibbons who kept possession ofthe estate until after the death of the father, when he deeded theentire property to the younger Thomas. Gibbons apparently mistreatedand neglected his sons for a friend took them to educated them. Therewas a court case brought against Gibbons.
