[2372] He was the founder of Cheshire, MA. His residences in MA and RI and inProvidence until 1751 when he lived in Smithfield...Joseph is calledweaver on early deeds which was the ancestral trade of the EnglishBennetts. In 1763 he bought a farm in Coventry which he sold in 1768from New Providence. His first purchase in Cheshire was in 1765 andhe and Nicholas Cooke owned the whole of a large territory, parts ofwhich are now in Cheshire, Adams, and Windsor. The first purchasersbrought many others with them from RI. Cooke and Bennett soon dividedtheir shares running a division through the lands from east to west.Bennett had the southern half and the house which he built in 1765 andlived in until 1785 is still standing, known as the Wells house, onthe brow of the hill above Cheshire Harbor. Wells lived first on afarm near the southern end of the hill but exchanged farms withBennett in 1787 after his removal from town. Joseph Bennett wasJustice of the Peace, the wealthiest man in the region and a man ofgreat influence. In his later life he became a Shaker and the familywas compelled leave town on accoutnt of the religious disturbancearoused by Mother Ann Lee who started the Community at Lebanon, NYnearby. They moved to the Watervliet community in Nikayuna, NY. Hisgrave along with his wife and three daughters are in the cemeterythere. The other children remained at Lebanon where their births anddeaths are recorded. Two daughters, Eunice and Lucy, did not join himin his change of faith...
