He came to Evanston, IL where he changed his surname from Hansen toAugustinus because there were so many Hansens. It was here that hewent to school.

Tradition makes him a descendant of Edward Wightman, burned for heresyat Litchfield in England, 1612, Apr 11 (being the last to suffer deathfor religious liberty).
George is thought to have arrived in this country in 1654 at the ageof 20. His older brother, Valentine Whitman, had early settled inProvidence. The father, John, and his other sons arrived in Newportand went immediately to the Wickford area of Rhode Island whereValentine was employed as an Indian interpreter. This area is notNorth and South Kingston, RI. Valentine deeded the Quidnessetthomestead to George in 1682.
The descendants of George have more generally preserved the spellingof the name as Wightman, though occasionally using the other form -Whitman.
1669. He and others were arrested by CT authorities and taken toHartford because they owned allegiance to RI. They were kept in jailsome time. 20 May 1671. He took oath of allegiance. 6 May 1678.Freeman 29 Jul 1679. He and 41 others of Narragansett petitioned theking, praying that he "would put an end to these differences about thegovernment, which hath been so fatal to the prosperity of the place;animosities still arising in people's minds as they stand affected tothis or that government." 1686. Constable. 1687. Taxed 11s. GrandJury. He was for some years member of the Town Council. 17 May 1710.
He and seventeen others bought 7,000 acres in Narragansett of thevacant lands ordered sold by the Assembly. 19 Feb 1713. He and wifeElizabeth sold Wm. Gardiner 27 1/2 acres in Boston Neck for 108pounds. He owned some 2,000 acres of the best land in Rhode Island inNorth Kingston, Exeter, and Westerly. 1723. Will-codicil-proved 13Feb 1722. Executors were sons Daniel and Valentine.
