Carolyn Robinson in her book "Gardiners of Narragansett" advances thepossibility that George Gardiner was the son of a Thomas Gardiner whowas born in England and died in Roxbury, Massachusetts. This Thomashad a son Thomas, also born in England and married in Roxbury in 1641.The son Thomas would obviously be a contemporary of George. There isno record to our knowledge, of George having a brother Thomas, or thathis father was named Thomas.
An article reprinted in "Genealogies of Rhode Island Families" titled"One Line of the Gardiner Family" contains some rather fanciful dataregarding what would appear to be the sons of George Gardiner. Itproposes their father as a Joseph Gardiner "youngest son of Sir ThomasGardiner, Knight, ...". This Joseph, born in 1601, came early to thiscountry and died 'in Kings County, RI in 1679'.
Other researchers have given George's father as a Rev. MichaelGardiner. They further assert that George married first in England aSarah Slaughter by whom he had a child (or children).
In a compilation of the names of those taking the oath of Freeman inMassachusetts we have the following:
1640 Edmond Gardiner
1641 Thomas Gardiner
1642 George Gardiner (Salem)
1646 Thomas Gardiner
1652 Richard Gardiner (Wobourne)
1672 Joseph Gardiner (Salem)
1675 Samuel Gardiner (Salem)
1680 John Gardiner (Wobourne)
In another article reprinted in GRIF contributed by a Mr Pierce, TownClerk of North Kingstown, he lists mention of George Gardiner in RhodeIsland records, beginning in Eight month 1st, 1638 admitted as aninhabitant of Aquidneck (Quidnessett). Tenth month 17th, 1639 George, together with Robert Stanton and others embraced as freeman ofNewport. At the General Court of Elections First month 12th day, 1640there were present George Gardiner and Robert Stanton, among others. The Court roll of freeman of Newport dated March 16, 1641 contains thenames of George Gardiner, Robert Stanton and others. At the GeneralCourt of Elections, March 1642, George Gardiner elected seniorsergeant and Robert Stanton junior sergeant. In 1644 in Newport GeorgeGardiner chosen ensign, Robert Stanton chosen sergeant. In 1660 Georgewas a witness to a deed. In 1662 he was a commissioner for the town ofNewport.
According to the article by Mr Moriarty, George died testate afterOctober 22, 1673 probably about 1677. The record of the probate of hisestate has not been found and probably was in the 'lost Newportrecords'.
If there was any connection between this George Gardiner and any ofthe Gardiners of Massachusetts it is not obvious from the informationavailable.
Mr Moriarty states that the order of birth of George and Herodias'children is uncertain, but he thinks possibly the order in which theysigned the Oath of Allegiance to King Charles on May 19, 1671 may beindicative; that being: Benoni, Henry, George and Nicholas. WhyWilliam's signature is not recorded is unknown.
On November 17, 1705 Benoni Henry George William Nicholas and JohnWatson
and wives Mary Joan Tabitha Elizabeth Hannah and Rebecca, all ofKingstown, sold land to John Potter, the money to be paid to ThomasHicks of Flushing, Long Island.
Mr Moriarty's article states that Dorcas was a known child of Georgeand Herodias. However, the identity of Rebecca as their child is lesscertain. The fact that she and John Watson were parties to the abovementioned deed doesn't constitute positive proof.
[3356] He was fifth in a list of 59 men admitted on the first of the 8thmonth, 1638 "to be inhabytants of the island now called Aqueedneck".(RI Col. Rec 1:95) He bought 6 square miles of land from theNaragansett Indians in Newport.
[3352] Another source says he died before 14 Jun 1678. (Founders andPatriots. Founders of Early American Families.)
[3354] He came on the ship Fellowship sailing with his wife and 3 sons. Twosons, Edward and Robert, and his wife Sarah perished before reachingtheir destination. Benoni is thought to be the only surving son.
[9706] Her first husband was John Hicks. Third was John Porter.
[9710] She petitioned the General Assembly for a divorce which was granted.
