[285] Isaac Hale was a devout Methodist and often put up the circuitpreacher in his home.

His prowess as a hunter is described by Rev. George Peck a Methodistminister on the Broome circuit, in his book

[287] He inherited his grandfather's land in Wells, Vermont with theprovision that he take care of his grandmother. When she died hedeeded some of her land to his brother.

[288] Isaac and Nathaniel and their wives left Vermont with a yoke of steersand a cart carrying all their goods and traveled about 220 miles fromWells, Rutland Co. to Willingborough, Luzerne Co., PA in about 1790.Isaac and Nathaniel purchased property under Connecticut's claim tothe land only to find that the state of Pennsylvania disputed theirright of ownership. They eventually had to negotiate terms forrepurchase from PA.

[289] Isaac bought land in Harmony twp. between 1809 and 1833. (Deed bookII, p. 444, Luzerne County Courthouse, Wilkes-Barre, PA; Deed book II,p. 138, Susquehanna Co. Courthouse, Montrose, PA; Book 6, p. 225; Book8, p. 47; Book 9, p. 77.) At least one of these deeds, of fifty acres,Book 6, p. 255, may represent an attempt on the part of Isaac topurchase back land which he bought originally in conjuction withothers.

[290] The tax list of 1813, names Isaac, Jesse, and Nathaniel Lewis asfree-holders. Isaac is identified as having served as a "supervisor,assessor, and collector.

[280] After his mother's death, he went with his grandfather, Arah Ward, to
Vermont.

[282] His tombstone is found in the McKune Cemetery, Oakland Twp.,
Susquehanna Co., PA. He was buried there by his own request in what
was then his land back of the garden. His wife was buried next to him.
