Known as Robert of Beccles, Co. Suffolk, Eng. read at Magdalen
College, Cambridge; was a minister over 30 years at Hingham, co
Norfolk. He was a zealous Puritan and influenced a number of his
parishioners in Hingham, to emigrate to New England where they took
part in the founding of Hingham, MA about 1635. In 1638 he was forced
to escape from England and join his former parishioners in Hingham,
MA. He came with his wife and 2 children and 2 servants and his
brother, Joseph, and his family in the [IT:Diligent:IT], 1638, and on
the 28th of Nov of that year was ordained; he was made freeman 13 Mar
the next year and was granted 7 acres of land in Hingham, MA, on
Bachelor (Main) St. However he later returned to England, 27 Oct 1641,
with his wife and son Joseph, and went back to his old parsonage where
he was reinstated in his former parish. His daughter Ann remained and
married Capt. John Mason who was famous for his command of the Pequot
War and his public service in CT.
